Juan rolled over and slapped the top of his blinking digital alarm clock. He resumed the fetal position grumpily, pulling the cushy white comforter up to his face to shield his eyes from the early morning sun which sought to invade his chamber of rest.
His wife stirred next to him; he felt her roll over beneath the covers. Her warm breath grazed his face as she let out a long, sleepy sigh in his direction. Juan feigned sleep. He knew that she was looking at him, expecting him to get up and get ready for work, and that, in a few seconds, he would get a firm nudge in the diaphragm if he refused to acknowledge her stare. He kept his eyes closed, not too tight, not too loose; if she thought he had actually fallen asleep again, he might get some leeway.
Sure enough, a moment later, he felt a knee softly invade the space just below his sternum; she knew that this would always wake him up. He kept pretending. He knew that the next one would hurt, because she knew he was awake now, but it was too early, and the sun was just to bright.
"Juan. Juan, wake up."
He braced himself for the nudge, but it didn't come. Slowly, he felt a leg creeping between his own two. He felt her breath on his face. A hand wrapped around his waist, and she planted a firm but gentle kiss directly on his lips.
Juan couldn't help a smile.
He opened his eyes, and saw his lover there, gazing expectantly at him from across the pillow. When she saw that his eyes were open, she smiled and let out an airy chuckle.
"Get up!"
He rolled over, groaning playfully, and clutched his pillow. It was on now. She kneed him in the back, not holding back this time.
"Hey, take it easy!" he whined.
"Then get up!"
Another groan. She laughed, this time out loud, and began pushing at the small of his back; she knew there was no way she could ever move someone his size, but she was feisty, and she knew that, if pestered enough, Juan would get up eventually.
