Well, could you give me some advice then? My best friend's brother is engaged to a German girl and they've spent the past two years dating across both continents. They decided to get married at the drop of a hat, so he called his parents and told them that they're getting married tomorrow and asked them not to say anything to any other family members b/c he didn't want people to get offended that they're not invited to the wedding. His parents were allowed to fly out there to meet them afterwards.
Well, it turns out his mom misunderstood. He WANTED them to tell the family and she totally screwed it up. Now her feelings are hurt because he got mad at her for not telling anyone. His parents unfortunately bought plane tickets for the last weekend that his wife will be in town before heading back to Germany, and he informed them that they would prefer to spend that weekend alone. His dad is furious b/c he bought expensive tix, his mom is hurt, he's pissed off, the family wanted a wedding and now they don't get one... omg, it's an emotional holocaust
How do you think they should fix all this?
Guess it's just miscommunication. It's a pretty hard decision, but I guess he has to let his parents know that it was a misunderstanding.

That's definitely a tricky situation. Maybe your friend should call his brother and remind him that, even though he's responsible for his own actions, they do reflect on others. A wedding is certainly an intimate celebration between two people, but it's also a time to welcome someone into your family. By not allowing his family a chance to meet his wife, the brother is basically starting off her place in his family on a poor footing.
That being said, the parents need to realize that it all boils down to a misunderstanding. With something that abrupt it's easy to fall into confusion. They can be upset that everything was so rushed and hushed, but hopefully they'll understand that he tried to make sure everything was in place and his family knew what was going on. His only crime is wanting time alone with his new wife, which most people can understand.
In any case, family is a close bond. There may be some turmoil in the beginning but hopefully they can come back together and all enjoy the brother's happiness and love for his wife.
