The guiding philosophies of groups like this tend to emphasize sacrifice, and when the leader starts to make the development of the group about them and their ego, the sacrifices made by the followers wind up benefiting the leader, and so the dynamic becomes predatory. In the second video you posted, Cohen speaks about how, prior to "creation", "God" typifies a kind of self-love, and he even uses the term "narcissism" to describe the "Creator". This analogy is all meant to demonstrate the "purpose in life", so it speaks volumes about how Cohen views his purpose as the leader of the group. When "narcissism" defines the purpose in any measure, then the group is liable to become predatory in that it winds up serving the leader above all. Even tiny philosophical implications have snowball effects when they are put into practice.

An effective leader must place their followers before themselves.
