2nd edit: I don’t consider IEEs more childish than ESEs really, but maybe childish in different ways. For one ESEs flip between cheeriness and seriousness easily. With IEEs this seems more blended. Often older IEEs who’ve lived through a lot try to be cheery but seem sad and beaten down. They seem to all either get jaded in their old age or frantically chase after the optimism they were once able to effortlessly effuse and they just end up seeming even sadder.

But I used to be friends with an older ESE woman at my church when I was a teenager. I don’t want to post the story on a public forum but she lived through something absolutely horrific. It never stopped gnawing at her as far as I knew, and the few times she talked about it a shadow passed over her face and she seemed vulnerable, but the rest of the time she was a font of positivity and tried to do whatever she could for other people. She gave the impression of having an eternal source of youthful optimism. I think one of the things that really distinguishes ESEs from IEEs is that ESEs never lose that sense of childlike optimism and learn how to integrate the darkness of the world seamlessly into their positive personas. Poor IEEs just wither away unless they manage to remain somewhat sheltered and reassured of the goodness in the world.
