What function, if any, would you relate will power to? Which types have the best willpower, and which types have a difficult time denying themselves something (or forcing themselves to do something)?

My ISTj mom has excellent will power. Peter does, too.
I started this thread because of a conversation last night in which Peter criticized my lack of will power (though he didn't use those words exactly), not on doing something that I want to do, but on not doing something. It is true that I have next to no will power when it comes to denying myself something I want.
Boo. This kind of shit promotes stereotypes.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...
Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
Whilst our laughter echoed,
Under cerulean skies...
@Joy, yeah creative function Se could also have pretty good willpower, including isfj's who have emotional will of steel.

Yeah, I agree. Typology and functions are bullshit. They just promote stereotypes.Originally Posted by Gilligan

Connecting unrelated traits with psychological functions does promote negative stereotypes. There are people here still learning whom you will undoubtedly confuse and give false ideas about types by doing this kind of thing.

I posted this thread last night right before I went to sleep, and upon waking and reading people's responses, something occurs to me...

Now tell me how will power is not function or type related and how discussing this functional trait is promoting incorrect stereotypes.
classical Ji imo.

But seriously, I don't like these "which type is the most X" questions. They never lead to any interesting conclusions.
INFp-s have insane will power. If they set their mind onto something, they will do it, no matter the bruising, the beating or the fact that they will most likely never accomplish the end goal. In my experience psychologically healthy people with good self esteem have strong will power, regardless of type.
Also I think if anything it's related to individual functions and their area of expertise, like types will have the will power to push a vision, while types for instance will have the will power to accomplish something like a great feat, types to build a great system, to create a great system, to build a social order, to create a great social order, to accomplish a great vision and to realize/push a great accomplishment.
To explain it on an example, a will paint a masterpiece but the process of painting itself is something they are persistent while a type will accomplish a great feat like conquering a nation but the greatness of the feet is what they are persistent with. The difference between them is that focuses on the process while on the result.
It's the same with the other functions, the introvert ones focus on the process and their persistence lies there, in performing the process the desired way, while the extrovert ones focus on the result, their persist on having the desired result.
Of course will power is the level of their persistence and in the end is determined by the psychological health of an individual.
By definition, will is the ego direction of psychic elements, to include functions.Originally Posted by Joy
I believe that even given common meaning, and taking into account all variations of will presented and psychology, that cognition is not the actor in will, ego is.
I believe what you mean is which function would give what you see as the expression of will on their environment. But, you are confusing that expression of will with will itself. Gilligan was attempting to address your point using the aforementioned psychological definition.
Lastly, I would state, once again, that functions and behavior of the ego affected by functions are not the same thing at all. These types of threads are flawed because most people here don’t recognize that functions are cognition, and personality is not active cognition, active use of functions. Will is a product of the ego, and not related to functions or to type.
