Sorry to some of the forum members here whose religion is anime Catholicism (I'm not Catholic at all, just think this history is really interesting due to what I see as a tendency by a lot of people to equate religions with culture and geography. Also lots of insight to the wars between China and Japan and how European attempts at colonization worked.)

When the Japanese tried to keep Western ideals out, and that seems to be most of what the trampling on Jesus icons was about on one level, they were poor. Now they're probably ironically better at being stereotypically Western than the British are. Hmm.
