Dating apps are terrible places for meeting dates. It's a strange approach to finding a relationship.

The approach is fine, people are strange. Their subjective views and preconceptions are out of whack. It should be the most straightforward and efficient way of spurring relationships, but we're not there yet.

The problem I believe is two-fold:
(1) Dating apps/sites are owned by business folk who have an incentive to keep people engaged for as long as possible, which means helping you find that relationship does not benefit them in the long-run. Hence, the way they design and operate these tools is optimized to serve their interest over their customers'.
(2) The majority of end users fall into either of two categories: (a) naive optimists who keep giving away their time and money to exploitative opportunists, without the mental capacity and/or willingness to recognize what's going on and do something about it (e.g. come up with better alternatives), and (b) psychopathic narcissists who misuse these platforms for attention and/or casually hunting prey on the side.

The points above leave little room for honest, mutually beneficial interactions and social transactions to take place.
