For some people It's actually quite challenging to sing out of tune on purpose. To reproduce this performance one would have to transcribe it note for note. By the way this way of singing is not very different from the original singing of most singers of today without Auto-Tune...
Now, there is no need to air sing like a lot of singers used to do with playback. We can use Auto-Tune live :
