I know that some people did not enjoy interacting with him because he was pretty harsh at times, but from what I've read, he wasn't "mean" for no reason.

he treated some people quite badly with little to no provocation, beyond his opinion of their stupidity/wrongness/etc.; there isn't a way around that.
I didn't say he was fair or something like that, but he always had a reason for the things he did. Sure, that might be needless to say, since we all have reasons and motivations for what we do. I just wanted to say that he wasn't treating people badly simply for the fun of it. His reactions might have been too rough sometimes, but not random.

Well, three of those gamma folk are dead to me, so it is all fine.

Are you talking about my case, or in general? In my case he would "substantiate" by saying other mean things that had no basis in reality, but it still doesn't really count as a reason really. I dont know what happened in other people's interactions. He seemed to intentionally target me for some unprovoked reason unbeknownst to myself. I actually liked him a lot before he started doing that.
