That looks like black licorice. The stuff you either love or hate. In my chase, I don't like it and no one of my family members like it either.
I'm really into trail mix as snack... the type of mix that contains little chucks of chocolate.

Over here we call it salmiakki (ammonium chloride is the main component taste-wise). We put it everywhere from ice-cream to booze. National "dish".

I've heard of it. I know it's quite common in Scandinavia. In Germany it's more common in nothern regions, in southern regions – where I'm from – it's rather uncommon, however.
In Germany the allowed amount of ammonium chloride (in food) is limited by food law.
