Doesn't everyone know that the Societ Union was like this? This film is not surprising for me. Stalin was definitely the #2 dictator and mass murderer at that time. If ****** didn't start the war I'm quite sure Stalin would have done it for communism (or rather Lenin's/Stalin's/Marx' idea of it). Then, maybe the Germans would have been allies to the rest of the world to fight against the Soviet Union... who knows?

I know all about it, I just like being irrational. People also love Ghengis Khan and nobody says anything about that.
Apparently the rest of the world is still as ignorant as it was 80 years ago...

That's really not fair. You can still find abandoned ghost towns in places like Iran whose inhabitants were massacred by Mongols.
Mongol invasions devastated many countries. Iraq, for example, still hasn't recovered to the level of wealth/culture/civilization it had before the Mongol invasion in 1258.

shit, that's some great little history/politics talk.
well, USA and their generals are also as evil as ****** and Stalin.
and Lithuania was fucked by Russia for more 200 yrs, and it's not like 50 yrs of occupation was 'it'. Lithuania was being degreded for many many yrs. There's pretty interesting history show broadcasted here on that whole thing. It's like the best damn thing I've seen this year anythere. But hmm it's financed by local monopolist, yeah...
Yeah, I apologize, I suppose am just as guilty as they are. I wanted to post reasons why the Soviet Union should not be glorified, but in my mind that would have been redundant. I thought bringing up the fact that it collapsed was enough to get the point across.

Plenty of major nations were responsible for serious crimes against humanity (especially Britain, France, USA, and oh yeah Canada too) at some point. None of them deserve to be glorified in any way or to have their deeds forgotten. But if you're going to do something wrong, at least do it right; Katyusha at least sounds nicer than O Canada.
Yes, exactly. And remember what they did in Finland. They were first throwing cluster bombs and then claiming it were food supplies in their homeland...
Those dictatorships in the past should never be glorified, there are also many people here who claim the GDR "wasn't that bad at all!". Bullshit. But people were corrupted in these days, so it's not a reason to hate the people. The culture is much older than these criminal regimes, and so is the song Katyusha older than the CCCP.

Correct. That is why I believe in fighting for the good in each county. If I was Swiss, I would certainly protect my right to own firearms as it is an important tradition for them.
The Russians have a fascinating culture, and the United States has explicit freedoms that are supposed to be inalienable by governments. Around the world it is a fight against good and evil.

dude, friendliness is good shit, but c'mon you! What do you know about russian culture? What do you know about US? US is like almost the shittiest system in history. Explicit freedoms? Then someone's punching in your face everyday telling you are bad, it's one thing, but then you believe that without that someone telling you that you are bad, blah blah, do you get it or not?
I don't know, I have not actually been to Russia, but I would like to go there someday. Right now I am studying basic Russian language. I also have been absorbing some eastern European culture and history as I can causally do from my home computer when I am doing my homework. I have also read a couple of books for school.
I live in the US, and I know much about its history. The United States is not perfect, there is a lot of things that my country has done that is hidden from most Americans. It is still a great country, it is truly the land of opportunity.
The problem with the United States right now is its people and our government. We used to be a highly productive country with the strongest, brightest people, but that has all changed in the last few decades. Today, most Americans are a bunch of slobs, many of which are devoid of basic knowledge. This is a short answer, but if you want a longer one, let me know.
It has nothing to do with friendliness, its just, it is what it is.

I believe that few countries deserve to be glorified. The history of Britain and France's colonial empires is strikingly bad and in some places makes your stomach churn.
The history of the USA and Canada begin with the ethnic cleansing of millions from the indigenous native population. Then there is American, Canadian, British, French... involvement in setting up horrible dictatorships all throughout the world.
But the reason I started this thread wasn't to glorify the USSR. I just liked those songs. Sometimes it's possible to admire an aspect of something in spite of how horrible it is. It's an irrational act of human nature. In spite of Genghis Khan's brutal reputation, it's easy to admire his ability to command troops. It's also difficult not to admire America's economic superiority and the diplomatic cunning with which Britain controlled its empire.
That's beside the fact that a few good aspects always inevitably exist under even the most horrible conditions. For example, Genghis' expansion, while brutal and destructive, also united China and connected the Eastern and Western parts of Asia into a stronger trading network. Britain controlled a massive colonial empire, but had strong and progressive laws to ensure the freedom and prosperity of its own citizens.
Yes, I know how horrible the USSR was and I wouldn't in a million years want that regime to come back to life, so I do appreciate your criticism. That's punctuated by the fact the I personally lived under a socialist dictatorship that was very similar to it.
The Baltic Way or Baltic Chain (also Chain of Freedom,[1] Estonian: Balti kett, Latvian: Baltijas ceļš, Lithuanian: Baltijos kelias, Russian: Балтийский путь) was a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on August 23, 1989. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 600 kilometres (370 mi) across the three Baltic states – Estonian SSR, Latvian SSR, and Lithuanian SSR, republics of the Soviet Union.
The protest was designed to draw global attention by demonstrating a popular desire for independence for each of the entities. It also illustrated solidarity among the three nations. It has been described as an effective publicity campaign, emotionally captivating and visually stunning scene.[2][3] The event presented an opportunity for the Baltic activists to promote their view of illegal Soviet occupation and position the question of Baltic independence not as a political matter, but as a moral issue. Soviet authorities in Moscow responded to the event with intense rhetoric,[2] but failed to take any constructive actions that could bridge the widening gap between the Baltic states and the Soviet Union. Within six months from the protest, Lithuania became the first of the Republics of the Soviet Union to declare independence.
If not Baltic states and Iceland - the only nation among international community that didn't hesistate to recognize the independence of Lithuania - Soviet Union might have survived longer.

I thought that there had already been a lot of pressure within the Soviet Union that was leading to its demise throughout the 1980's. The Soviet Union first of all could not compete with the United States economically in the cold war in terms of military build up, so the Soviet Union drew on its economy too heavily causing unrest. Other events such as the Chernobyl incident had people realize that the Soviet government was not as powerful as they thought, despite all of the rhetoric.

Yep, I definately would like to read more on what you think about that and I'm actually going to watch some stuff on that subject right now
