Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

The question is not if cross gender friendship is possible, but what each of us understand by "friendship". Through this, I agree with more than the OP supposition: it is Ti/Fe related, Alpha and Beta trait.

There are 2 characteristic that I can think of which can explain the issue over this dichotomy, Ti/Fe vs Te/Fi (Merry vs Serious), which probably most people are aware of:

First of them is how these quadra groups create goals, how they define their interest. Azeroff, if he comes around, could help here with labelling, I'll just say it in my own words for now: Merry people's interest is mostly risen by definite, clear, defined things - qualities (absolute), while Serious people by good, satisfactory, helpful, enough things, and so on - quantities (relative). I regret that I'm in a memory lack of keywords for this difference, and someone vandalized again the Merry/Serious article on Wikisocion, but there are a lot of discussions in the forum about this.

As said previously, Ti/Fe people think each matter in absolute terms, in this case "it is a sexual attraction or not"? Imagine such couple of "friends" raising this issue and showing their hands one day: will the friendship be the same? Obviously not. There is sexual attraction between them and the only think which keeps them far from the bed is refraining themselves.

On the other hand, Serious types use to think in relative terms: "can it be sexual attraction or not"? They can easily raise the issue because it is implicit from the start that they talk only about the possibility - physical conformity, compatibility, etc.
It seems to me that this tells only half of the story. It is true that the Merry types have quantitative view of a certain area of life, but there is another area in which the roles are opposite. Serious types have often been described as having more "formal" ways of interacting than Merry types. They seem to apply a quantitative analysis to actions and the details of the presentation of things. The quantative/qualitative distiction appears to link up with Logics/Ethics and as we know, neither side of Merry/Serious values Logic or Ethics in an absolute way, but values it in as far as it is manifest on either the level of the Extrovert Judging (Dynamic) functions or on that of the Introvert Judging (Static) functions. It's the area that determines the attitude, not the prevalence of quantitative analyses or qualitative analyses in itself.

I like pie. Anyone wants some?
    She is wise
    beyond words
    beautiful within
    her soul
    brighter than
    the sun
    lovelier than
    love
    dreams larger
    than life
    and does not
    understand the
    meaning of no.
    Because everything
through her, and in her, is
    "Yes, it will be done."
