They could very well just care about making themselves sound right, not about the actual person being named (I get this), which is why your assumption was unnecessary.
It doesn't matter what purpose they care about -- appearing right, vilifying an opponent, proving their "badass"ness to the public -- because the object of focus [you] would not change. Since the central criticism revolves around the same thing, any "care" that they had would spring from and ultimately tie back to [you], regardless of the individually diverging motivations.
