I wrote a short piece of software and did some simple analysis of the data. There's obvious clustering, probably on several levels.

One cluster seems to center around DeAnte and Diana, one or two others seem to have Ezra at the core, otherwise the pattern is not too clear yet.

I need specialized tools for cluster analysis, in particular for visualization and graphing. Does anyone know anything usable, preferably open source?

Ok. I've been struggling to learn the software tools and the proper techniques, this seems to be what I dare expose to forumite scrutiny so far: A PCA biplot of 24 variables (forumite responses) in 119 observations (forumites responders expressed perceptions about):




For the time being, I ignored niffweed's response because it needs a special conversion to the standard reply format.


Basic explanation to the graph:
Each blue arrow (axis) represents a person's perceptions, there are 24 of them, each representing a forumite's answer to the survey.

Each point (green number) represents how a forumite is perceived among the 24 who answered. Being located far along a respondent's axis indicates closeness, a location close to the origin or beyond it in the minus direction means either that the responder haven't really noticed you or think you're in a distant quadra, or both.


For simplicity of perusal, I replaced names with numbers in the graph. The codes are as follows :

Some examples of how to interpret the graph:

1. Perceptions about Expat (no 50) is located far along in the plus direction of the Warlord axis. This may indicate that Warlord perceives a large level of quadra closeness to and is familiar with Expat.

2. Perceptions about MysticSonic(no 88) is located far in the opposite direction along the Warlord-like perception axis. This may indicate that Warlord perceives a large quadra distance and/or haven't really noticed the person.

3. munenori2s perception-axis point in almost the exact opposite direction to Warlords. His/Her perceptions about Expat and MysticSonic are the reverse of Warlord's.

I think given the type of analysis done, it could be assumed that the likelihood of two people being in the same quadra increases as their data points are closer together.

I think it's inconclusive because this is in all honesty a rather small sample size of pollsters. The standard deviation of error is probably relatively high.

do the numbers necessarily mean anything if you disregard the axes, i.e. does is mean anything that 50 and 110 are on opposite sides of the graph, or that 64 and 108 are extremely close to each other?

Didn't really get the question, but closeness of two green points (like 64 and 108) means the corresponding individuals are perceived similarly, even by those who's perception vectors are displayed at like 90 degree angle to each other.

Mercutio is halfway between the Gamma and Beta axes
Mimosa Pudica appears to be along the Gamma axis
Gulanzon and Kamajama are right next to each other (and it makes a lot of sense), both along the Alpha axis.
Starfall appears to be along the Alpha axis
Subterranean appears to be along the Alpha axis
mcnew appears to be along the Alpha axis
Errant appears to be along the Delta axis
UDP is clearly along the Delta side and not the Beta side
implied is between the Delta and Gamma axes
Smilingeyes is between Delta and Gamma, but appears to be more along the Gamma axis.
Ashton appears to be along the Gamma axis
