Default Beta ST Humor (ISTj & ESTp)

... and what do you loathe? I ask because my dad, an LSI, does not get a lot of the same types of humor my mom, brother, and I [all Deltas] love... this is to be expected, I guess, but it has piqued my curiosity.

So, Beta STs [especially LSIs], what do you think of shows/movies like:
    - The Office*
    - Seinfeld
    - SNL
    - Family Guy
    - The Royal Tenenbaums*

    +1 for Seinfeld + SNL

    Aqua Teen Hunger Force
    Beavis & Butthead
    Ren & Stimpy
    The Simpsons
    Southpark
    Spongebob
    Johnny Bravo
    Drawn Together
    All in the Family

SNL I find amusing if I chance across it on TV, but I wouldn't bother to tune in unless it was to watch a specific host/skit I'd otherwise heard about. Family Guy is amusing, but again, I don't follow it. Never found Seinfeld particularly funny - it was ok, but I didn't really get the appeal. Haven't seen The Office or The Royal Tenenbaums, sorry.

Um, FWIW, I massively dislike Jackass and Jerry Springer. And I don't like any of those shows much. Drawn Together is ok. I really dislike Married with Children.

    TV shows I find hilarious:
    Boston Legal
    Arrested Development
Who's Line Is It Anyway can be quite funny
um, I guess I prefer stuff like Monty Python, Blackadder. Parodies and satire are usually a good bet too.
oh yeah, early season Scrubs! I lost interest around when JD and Eliot hooked up, felt like the tenor of the show changed.
    The Daily Show isn't bad
oh, and I find Conan O'Brien pretty amusing too (but generally not the other late night hosts)

Sitting down to watch something that sets out to be 'funny' isn't really my thing though - like, I've got this exchange going with one of my best friends, where we basically just send each other links of whatever hilarious thing we've happened across online, with a good deal of one-up-manship going on there. I find that infinitely more amusing than sitting down to watch a comedy.

I don't know how much of this is type related though? I mean, I bet different LSIs are just going to like different kinds of shows/humour. Gender/age/upbringing is going to come into it a lot.

    Hope that helps!
    allez cuisine!

All LSI's loved Seinfeld, wept bitterly when it ceased broadcasting, and rejoiced at the DVD box set.

that is what i was getting at. if there is an inescapable appropriation that is required in the act of understanding, this brings into question the validity of socionics in describing what is real, and hence stubborn contradictions that continue to plague me.

Seinfeld, the office and family guy are among my favourite.
SNL I liked, but haven't really watched that much.
    The Tenenbaums wasn't very funny.

The Royal Tenenbaums is a great film, and while it's quite funny, the humour is less my style.

Two kinds of humour I like; satire and edgy humour. Family Guy you could probably stick in the latter category. I haven't seen the American version of The Office, but the British version sure as shit is genius. It's written by a guy called Armando Ianucci, who I've mentioned before. Anyone wanting to delve into British comedy should check his stuff out; I highly recommend Alan Partridge. Satire I find Americans are just as competent at doing as are the Brits, often better. Films such as Starship Troopers (okay, I admit, the director, Paul Verhoeven, is Dutch) are right down my street.

Only shows I ever got into were:

    Buffy
    Angel
    Charmed

And those old cartoons where the characters loved each other and like wrapped their tails around each other and there were hearts and shit. That was some intense IEI shit man.

I realize I'm not a Beta ST but so what, I wanted to answer the question anyway. =p

I think most of these are predominantly Alpha.

    I disagree.

I could imagine Alphas hating Family Guy. It's probably Beta.

The Office in the UK I'm not sure what it is, but I really doubt Alpha. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Te/Fi.

The Royal Tenenbaums is Delta. Most, if not all, of Wes Anderson's films are Delta.

    Seinfeld
, however, I've heard is Alpha, and I have no qualms with it. I haven't seen it, but it was about as big a hit as Friends (if not more so).

I watched my name is earl (or whatever the name is) the other night in passing and was laughing my ass off. Boston legal used to be good, but it got corny. I think dexter is an awesome show, and hilarious if you can appreciate dark irony. Weeds also tends to be pretty funny lol, but goofy/alpha-esque at times.

I definitely agree w the bolded parts, and these two are the main reasons I asked this question: because my dad despises both The Office and The Royal Tenenbaums, and we [my brother and I] have long speculated that it is because he is so much like the characters who are being ridiculed in those shows [Michael Scott and the father, respectively].

I am not saying these somewhat deranged characters are LSI's... but I wonder if LSI's, or people who know LSI's, see any parallels? In particular I am thinking of weak Fi, and Fe-craving.

Please note: this is not meant to bash LSI's; I am genuinely curious.

I was talking with danielle about Ni/Se vs. Ne/Si humor and she brought up an interesting perspective. She said that Ni/Se types tend to focus on what is funny about something, regarding its objective existence. We speculated that the Ne/Si people find the humor in the (collective) personal reactions to such objective characteristics about something. And I find this idea to be in accordance with my experience, because a lot of times I've noticed betas/gammas making jokes that appear bland, dry, or bare (to Ne/Si types, mainly), and I think it is due to this tendency to highlight 'what is' and not look for anything more subjective.

But beta Se is different than gamma Se. Like if I make a joke, I want the Se impact (see physics definition of divergence), but I *also* want to induce some sort of current of energy - an Fe effect as well.

So, my mom and brother were going to the holocaust museum this morning. And I had been up all night, so I didn't feel in the proper state to attend it, despite being partially interested. But upstairs, I kept asking my brother about jews, like I was testing the Se magnitude/boundary while tracking the Fe current/energy.

And then when they were getting ready to leave I told them to bring me back a swastika, and got the exact reaction I wanted: a sarcastic laugh from my ENFp brother and a taboo-induced, bitchy rant from my ESFj mom.

Beta humor at it's finest (no pun intended on ****** inter-quadra'ness lmao).

    Default making ESTps laugh

I love how easily I can make my SLE laugh! It's such an awesome feeling because I don't have to try really. He finds it so hilarious when I do something silly like immitate his mannerisms in a goofy way. Or we can just sit there and start laughing for no apparent reason. I dunno. It's so cool. It makes my heart swell with joy.

It just makes me feel appreciated and valued in a way that no one else can.

    I just felt like sharing....

Yea, I noticed how easy for me to crack a smile into an LSI. Usually they are somewhat serious. But when I try to act like something else, being threatical and dramatic in front of them. they usually have this small smile that doesn't open their mouth completely, and it is almost to me that they are enjoying it but trying to hide it in a way. I also happen to think that they are into people who shows a sense of geniue dramatic emotions.

Well I'd imagine that's how it would be for EIE/LSI. I wouldn't say I'm theatrical, just goofy but not in an out there way and usually just when we're alone do I feel comfortable enough to be this way. It sometimes happens in front of others, but it is usually instigated by him, at least visibly. I do get him worked up by playfully mocking him, but he's the one that's confident being bold. He helps me to open up, but what's awesome is that he seems to know when I feel comfortable enough. I like that he doesn't put me on the spot and seems totally okay with me fading into the background when I need to (which is most of the time).

Then sometimes I watch him, when he doesn't know I'm watching, and I marvel at how much space he owns around him. It's his space and he doesn't even need to make an effort to obtain it. It gives in. It surrenders to him willingly. And then he looks at me, or talks to me, or grabs me by the hand or just simply gestures me to come nearer. And he makes me part of his space! Our space now. And it feels like a shield. I can still be invisible but shine through him. And it's not scary or awkward because it makes others realize that we're part of the same entity. And they see me in the same light they see him. And he wants me there. He needs me there.

For some mysterious reason, SLE seam to like a lot goofiness.
I use to get this SLE girl laughing by simply translating some song's title from English to Romanian. Some song titles do sound funny in Romanian and that combined with a straight face made her laugh.
    "What is love?"
"The total absence of fear," said the Master.
    "What is it we fear?"
    "Love," said the Master.

    - Family Guy

The Office is what makes me laugh (the most) out of all of these. Havent seen The Royal Tenenbaums. SNL the least probably.
Some Friends episodes are funny af. Anthony Jeselnik is funny.

Personally I find The Office unfunny. Except maybe the character Shrutt. Its actually boring. Awkward'ness' situational humour is the trend right now.

Seinfeld is very alpha. It is probably bit too homebody and for lack of better word no meaning or struggle but in general OK for beta taste. I would like to hear gamma perspective on that particular masterpiece.

I'm constantly looking to align the real with the ideal.I've been more oriented toward being overly idealistic by expecting the real to match the ideal. My thinking side is dominent. The result is that sometimes I can be overly impersonal or self-centered in my approach, not being understanding of others in the process and simply thinking "you should do this" or "everyone should follor this rule"..."regardless of how they feel or where they're coming from"which just isn't a good attitude to have. It is a way, though, to give oneself an artificial sense of self-justification. LSE

    Dark clever layered jokes.

    Tosh > Gaffigan
Projection is ordinary. Person A projects at person B, hoping tovalidate something about person A by the response of person B. However, person B, not wanting to be an obejct of someone elses ego and guarding against existential terror constructs a personality which protects his ego and maintain a certain sense of a robust and real self that is different and separate from person A. Sadly, this robust and real self, cut off by defenses of character from the rest of the world, is quite vulnerable and fragile given that it is imaginary and propped up through external feed back. Person B is dimly aware of this and defends against it all the more, even desperately projecting his anxieties back onto person A, with the hope of shoring up his ego with salubrious validation. All of this happens without A or B acknowledging it, of course. Because to face up to it consciously is shocking, in that this is all anybody is doing or can do and it seems absurd when you realize how pathetic it is.

Oh hey, I started this thread *memories*

To answer my own question, almost 8 years later, Betas I know like dark humor, and things like Tosh.O. There was also one comedian in particular an SLE I know likes, but I can't recall the name at the moment.

I don't hang out w many Betas these days, though, so I guess I may be pretty out of touch... the ones I do keep up w are usually talking about their big life plans and ambitions, hardcore fitness routines, etc. rather than comedy preferences.

Interesting. I actually like guys from both your Love and Hate list: Louis CK and George Carlin, but also Dane Cook.

Dane Cook is the worst . Even worse then Adam Sandler and that says a lot.

I enjoy different kinds of humour, anything from Always Sunny to some cutesy Ne/Si things. What I don't like is old-school British humour (too affected, hyperbolic and goofy), toilet humour, anything trailer trash or ghetto, unless it's satire. Dark, sarcastic and mean is my fave.

The things you listed that you don't like are my favourite, I think. My own sense of humour is either really dry or really absurd or just well-timed roasting of people which can be interpreted as bitchy.

Ratchet things get me in a good mood quickly. Not a comedian per se but I like Jeffree Star's comments lol he's IEI

But....I like him. That's not what I had in mind when I said white trash/ghetto. I meant as in humour aimed at dumb rednecks or for example Tyler Perry movies. I don't mind trashiness in itself at all.
