That wasn't the whole point of automating it.

    1. It makes the possibility of human error much less likely. Name variants might be lost - how am I supposed to know that "Constantine I" and "Constantine the Great" are the same person?
    2. It reduces tedium. Programming is (usually) fun, manually merging spreadsheets is not. Convergences would be especially painful to compute.
    3. It scales.

yeah, but if you looked through the lists to make sure that nobody said Smith, Michael instead of Michael Smith it wouldn't hurt anything.

I think the cliche is "an ounce of prevention".

If people want to do a new benchmark list now, then let's go for it. It'll take a bit of time to change the instructions and put up announcements. Ganin's typings will be included, of course, as well as those printed in that book that came out last June (is there someone who has the book who can type up the typings for this?) and anyone else's who wants to. That will reduce the influence of groupthink that tends to accumulate in any single forum. Typings that are "way out there" won't influence the benchmark list, anyway.
It is easier for the eye of a camel to pass through a rich man than for a needle to enter the kingdom of heaven.

danielle has it. we were laughing about how idiotic the typings in it were.

Sadly, this is not really true if only a few people from the forum participate, like last time.

I'm not sure what the precise goal of the benchmark is, and perhaps in Russia it works better because - presumably - people are speaking of the same "socionics"; here we have several different "schools", whether they are seen as such or not, and that will lead to several "way out there" typings.

on the other hand, ganin's typings largely affected nothing because they were largely actors that nobody had ever heard of -- or who i had never heard of at least. and since most of ganin's typings are wrong, it isn't likely that they'll really have any kind of an effect.

Well, the effect would only be to remove a few people for whom there was only a partial consensus among forum members; it wouldn't tip the balance towards wacko typings or anything.
