For those who don't know "The Purge" is a movie where all laws will be removed for 12 hours and because of that people will want to murder others for the pure joy of it and what not.
I'd engage murder, theft and/or rape

“I tell you, freedom and human rights in America are doomed. The U.S. government will lead the American people in — and the West in general — into an unbearable hell and a choking life. - Osama bin Laden
I would lock myself into a house (preferably in posh neighbourhood) and would never in a million years take that black guy in.

Police strikes. Happens all the time. Here's one example.

tons of looting, vandalism. taxi drivers tried to burn down a rival company's building. some murders. but... 12 or 16 hours isn't really evidence of anything imo.
Forming intent to do any of these crimes prior to the day of the purge would actually still make you criminally liable, just not for the actual act, so the crimes would have to be more or less spontaneous or planned for the day. If the courts examined your actions and found a complexity that proved premeditation, you'd be pretty screwed.

Why do bad stuff, you can do illegal but useful things too.
I would not lock myself in a posh neighborhood, that's the first place I'd assume people would try to loot and steal from. If I was being safe I'd choose a low traffic area of little value, dress anonymously, and carry only essential items until the purge passes.
