umm i'm not sure why, but I could see an INTP having a sort of morbid fascination with something like that. plus, it's not very social and not practical, so that rules out some other types IMO.

Anyway, I think he's most likely 4w3, with 3w4 coming next. He says clearly that what kept him going was that his nails meant "he was not an ordinary man anymore" and that was based on people's reactions to him. That also confirms Fe.
I think ENFj or INFp make the most sense.

Huh? Where'd you read that INFps go out of their way to make life harder on themselves? How'd you come up with that perception?I was thinking INFp just on instinct - it seems like it would make doing a lot of easy things very difficult for no particular reason, and I doubt it's very comfortable. I'm an INFp and I'd never do something like this.

Well, I do a lot of personal shit for my own self that really does rub people the wrong way if they find out. But to me since it is so personal and individual, if somebody is giving me a hard time about it, I think they should mind their own bloody business. *shrug* I am polite with others to go out of my way to hide this when necessary. I think, doing such a socially suicidal thing like that is just... well, suicidal.
Couldn't he just get fake nails and be a weirdo like that instead? Maybe it wouldn't have the impact he was looking for personally for himself though, I see that.

Yeah, yeah. That fucks me over everytime I swear.
Yes. When explaining Te concepts to me you just have to explain them in such a tongue-in-cheek matter-of-fact fashion like I'm 3 years old. But I get that. Because you said it in a more ish way where I could relate, comprehend and understand.I meant it in this way: growing one's fingernails extremely long has negative practical side-effects, like making it really hard to type.
Yuck, he's so gross.
Easy answer is "Si devaluing"
He likes "fame",
Which made me think beta NF at first, but maybe just Se>Si
Just out of "habit' perhaps I'll say beta NF.
I don't particularly see an INTp being so into something like that nor wanting a spotlight because of it, but he could just be so messed up, I don't know.
Apparently feels like his fingernails are his gift to the world - "whoop-dee-doo"
Seriously gross.
On the other hand, if he grew up in a really poor place, it could be his means for getting some cash and bettering his life. So, I don't really know enough about him - I don't know the motivations for his decisions.

You're being too judgmental. It's eccentric as hell, weird, and maybe even a little creepy. But it doesn't mean he's mentally disturbed. Even somewhat. He seems calm and well-spoken in social situations for somebody that has to avoid crowds and people.I have no idea what his type is, but it seems to me that he is probably somewhat mentally disturbed.
He's just trying to be unique and it's transparent and annoying.

It's real -- he's been around for decades.
He just did not cut them and took care that they did not break (I guess they must also be unusually strong since many people's nails would naturally break way before that).
I think that's too harsh and I agree with B&D on that.

Ugh, I saw the still and couldn't watch the video. That's seriously...revolting.
ETA: I can handle the abstract grotesque, but I have this really bizarre reaction to physical things that disgust me, particularly people. It's not about ugliness - it more a sense of uncleanness or physical distortion and mutation - something wrong physiologically. It makes me really uncomfortable but at the same time I feel really bad for the person for some bizarre empathic reason, as though I can imagine myself in their physical state and it makes me really physically sick. I become quite helpless in a sense because I become almost paralysed, like there is nothing to be done about the horrible state of the world. So my only way of dealing with it is just to pretend that these things which repulse me so severely don't actually exist. And to hang out with clean, healthy people.
I remember once on a bus this very obese homeless man who was moulting and stunk of sewage came and sat next to me and I absolutely couldn't breathe and I was so completely miserable, but I didn't want to change seats because I didn't want to (this is going to sound quite stupid) hurt his feelings, because I don't think I could handle it very well if someone found me physically repulsive. So I got off the bus and had to wait for another one and was late to a meeting at Uni.

Wow unefille, that's quiet a precarious position you're holding there.

Wow! This guy is committed - I could never stick to something for that long.
My only curiosity is how in the world they became that thick....

Okay, well you're right that it is probably judgmental to say that he is mentally disturbed. I don't know this person at all and so I should not pass judgments like that. However, it's also pretty judgmental to say that he is eccentric as hell, weird, and creepy. I'm not sure how you can attack me for being judgmental and then say something like that in the next sentence.
It think the man is a genius. He could be ISTP-Te.... though I honestly couldn't watch the video for more that a few seconds. It was really grossing me out :/

Yeah, I was kind of equally fascinated and repulsed...fascinated enough to keep watching, but repulsed enough to make me wonder, "Am I doing this because I find it interesting enough to overcome my own revulsion, or is it just because I don't want to give in to my feelings of revulsion?"
Weird.

I dislike how people are attributing him doing this to some "Ni internal vision" or whatever the fuck. There is no Ni there; IN FACT, it's blatantly obvious he's trying to emulate Ni without even knowing what Ni is lol. As for Fe/Ti>Fi/Te, I just sense the latter. But yeah, no Ni lol, god what a fraud attention seeking bitch.

Back in the early 90s, I had a fascination with the Guinness Book of World Records. Our school would distribute book catalogues to which we could order books through them if so desired. So, starting in 1990 and each subsequent year after that until the end of my elementary school days, I anticipated and bought each annual release of the Guinness Book of World Records; it was the only book I really wanted to buy, so I saved money each year to be able to buy it.
I can clearly remember seeing this specific record because of the prominent picture of the fingernails beside the listing for the record. So this thread brought back a lot of memories of flipping through random records in those books and remembering the various images from them.
Having said that, I think in general you will find people with similar records who, in my opinion have similar personalities, or at the very least similar motivations for doing these "different" things.
Take for instance the person with the record for longest moustache:
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Frf_rYMLUa0[/ame]
Or maybe a clip from the World Beard and Moustache Championships
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F800WEVFHp0[/ame]
Or people involved in the Art Car movement
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32Ifz8SU6Mg[/ame]
There's a common theme I see among all of these and that is either to do/be something/someone different or to draw attention (which I am not suggesting this is a negative thing, I am suggesting that there is a motivation to come alive when the light is shined upon them).
Now, I don't think that everyone that does these sorts of records have the same personality type. However, I think the theme of creations and feats like this are clearly based themes.

There's also an element of self-expression in these types of things as well. A type of self-expression that is tangible, something people can see or touch or smell and remember.
Edit: This I think goes hand in hand with what I said earlier about the themes I see, which is to be somebody different/do something different or drawing attention.
It's a method of self-expression.

Also, I forgot to mention, I think maybe it was because of the exposure to this record in the Guinness Book of World Records (and pretty much each year I got the book after that), that this video did not repulse me at all.
