Doesn't everyone know that the Societ Union was like this? This film is not surprising for me. Stalin was definitely the #2 dictator and mass murderer at that time. If ****** didn't start the war I'm quite sure Stalin would have done it for communism (or rather Lenin's/Stalin's/Marx' idea of it). That's really not fair. You can still find abandoned ghost towns in places like Iran whose inhabitants were massacred by Mongols.
Mongol invasions devastated many countries. Iraq, for example, still hasn't recovered to the level of wealth/culture/civilization it had before the Mongol invasion in 1258.
Well here in Lithuania or as some people like to say Russia we learn about Mongol invasions in 6th grade.
These days Russians all have Mongol blood in them. Mongols used to be a really tricky nation and the real Russians used to be very smart. Quite a dangerous mix.

Plenty of major nations were responsible for serious crimes against humanity (especially Britain, France, USA, and oh yeah Canada too) at some point. None of them deserve to be glorified in any way or to have their deeds forgotten. But if you're going to do something wrong, at least do it right; Katyusha at least sounds nicer than O Canada.

Those dictatorships in the past should never be glorified, there are also many people here who claim the GDR "wasn't that bad at all!". Bullshit. dude, friendliness is good shit, but c'mon you! What do you know about russian culture? What do you know about US? US is like almost the shittiest system in history. Explicit freedoms? I don't know, I have not actually been to Russia, but I would like to go there someday. Right now I am studying basic Russian language. I also have been absorbing some eastern European culture and history as I can causally do from my home computer when I am doing my homework. I have also read a couple of books for school.
I live in the US, and I know much about its history. The United States is not perfect, there is a lot of things that my country has done that is hidden from most Americans. It is still a great country, it is truly the land of opportunity.
The problem with the United States right now is its people and our government. We used to be a highly productive country with the strongest, brightest people, but that has all changed in the last few decades. Today, most Americans are a bunch of slobs, many of which are devoid of basic knowledge. This is a short answer, but if you want a longer one, let me know.

I believe that few countries deserve to be glorified. The history of Britain and France's colonial empires is strikingly bad and in some places makes your stomach churn.
The history of the USA and Canada begin with the ethnic cleansing of millions from the indigenous native population. Then there is American, Canadian, British, French... involvement in setting up horrible dictatorships all throughout the world.
But the reason I started this thread wasn't to glorify the USSR. I just liked those songs. Sometimes it's possible to admire an aspect of something in spite of how horrible it is. It's an irrational act of human nature. In spite of Genghis Khan's brutal reputation, it's easy to admire his ability to command troops. It's also difficult not to admire America's economic superiority and the diplomatic cunning with which Britain controlled its empire.
That's beside the fact that a few good aspects always inevitably exist under even the most horrible conditions. For example, Genghis' expansion, while brutal and destructive, also united China and connected the Eastern and Western parts of Asia into a stronger trading network. Britain controlled a massive colonial empire, but had strong and progressive laws to ensure the freedom and prosperity of its own citizens.
Yes, I know how horrible the USSR was and I wouldn't in a million years want that regime to come back to life, so I do appreciate your criticism. That's punctuated by the fact the I personally lived under a socialist dictatorship that was very similar to it.

I thought that there had already been a lot of pressure within the Soviet Union that was leading to its demise throughout the 1980's. The Soviet Union first of all could not compete with the United States economically in the cold war in terms of military build up, so the Soviet Union drew on its economy too heavily causing unrest. Other events such as the Chernobyl incident had people realize that the Soviet government was not as powerful as they thought, despite all of the rhetoric.
