Default Video game preferences by type

If you play video/computer games, post your type and which genres you most enjoy.

I'm an INTJ, and I enjoy RTS (real-time strategy), tycoon (like sim-city), racing games, and FPS (first person shooters).

I'm particularly curious to see how many xSxx types enjoy RTS and tycoon games.

first person shooters (battlefield 1942, played all the dooms, quakes, unreals)
freebee netgames (bejeweled and the 500 other games that are the same but slightly different)
multiplayer autocombat games (Interstate '76, '82 (although both are kinda dead now))
acrochallenge (free online multiplayer word game... great! everybody should play it! if anybody dls it tell me and I'll go play too)

the only game I liked in the genre you seem to be hinting at is Civilization and I haven't played it in at least a year

i like rpgs- if you are bored they are great because they only make you a little less bored. Great way to relax. I like FPS alot besides that. Never liked RTS or any other games really. Oh, I like pet games quite a bit- Monster Rancher especially.

    ENTp, most likely.
-Point-and-click adventures, esp. LucasArts-style. Monkey Island!
-RPGs with decent storylines or lots of freedom. Morrowind. Neverwinter Nights. Pokemon. Kingdom of Loathing.
-Platformers, if well done. Some of the Spidermans were very cool in this category. And Conker!
    -Pinball, for some odd reason.
-Chess, online. I'll take any challengers over Yahoo (by PM). Bring it.

    INTp.

    - Real-time strategies: like the Red Alert series someone mentioned earlier.
    - First person shooters: Half-Life owns, though my current love is Postal 2. I played the shit out of classics like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.
    - Tycoon games are fun too, anything involving building/destroying things. Caesar was a pretty fun series.
    - Nearly every Maxis title involving Sims: SimCity, SimTower, SimCopter, The Sims, etc.
    - Flight sims and combat flight sims. Nobody makes good combat flight sims anymore. Why? Anyway, titles like European Air War were pretty badass. Tachyon was a pretty cool space combat/adventure game, and Bruce Campbell voices the protagonist!
    - War gaming period. Especially modern combat. Ahh, I recall the heydays of NovaLogic and Jane's Combat Simulations; the Comanche series, the Armored Fist series, Delta Force, the Naval Warfare Collection (a 3-in-1 pack released by Jane's including 688(I) Hunter/Killer, Jane's Fleet Command, and F/A-18). Oh yeah, and the Battlefield series is possibly one of the greatest multiplayer experiences ever. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is awesome, but I haven't played any of the newer releases.
    - I used to be really into certain racing games, too, like NASCAR or Need For Speed. I don't really like the newer Need For Speeds as much. They used to be all these great, prestigious European luxury sedans and sports cars. Like you could even drive a friggin' McLaren! Now it's shitty Japanese imports with ricer kits. Ok guys, adding the cops was cool, but enough of this Fast & Furious-esque bullshit.

I don't really like RPGs. I tried playing Anarchy Online, that got boring in a week, and MMORPGs are basically the same game over and over to me. Always a lot of grind and zero replayability; once you get up there, it's difficult to get back and even more frustrating to lose all your progress due to a careless miscalculation in skill points. Snooooooore. Though, Fallout is one RPG series I can definitely enjoy, and I can technically be considered an RPG gamer due to my amusement playing games like Grand Theft Auto which, arguably an FPS, latter installments have implemented more and more RPG elements making it a, what? Role-playing adventurous shoot 'em up?

Oh man, that just reminded me of Full Throttle. It's a shame that LucasArts' attempts at reviving that game have failed. I also remember loving some Indiana Jones game where you travel to Atlantis.

    I love:

Beat'em up - mutiplayer, especially online via mame
Sport games - again, mutiplayer online and/or physically
    FPS - online, still

    I like

    Open ended RPGs a-la Morrowind.

RPGs are some of my favorites.

Then I like sports games (tennis, baseball, along those lines).

    Shooters are good (GoldenEye, TimeSplitters).

Played StarCraft a lot (but never ever ever World of WarCraft *shrugs*).

Some simulation (rollercoaster tycon, sims), racing games (F-Zero, Mario Kart), and fighters (Mortal Kombat, Tekken) can also be good.

That was in a rough order, but I think it depends largely on who makes the games and what quality they are. I don't play on-line games.

strategy, both TBS and RTS, although i tend to ignore most games in this genre because a select few are extraordinary (civ, HOMM3 (4 and 5 suck, i still play WoG sometimes), starcraft, some of the old command and conquer games) and the rest stink.

almost any RPG that has sufficiently few bugs to be playable with enthrall me.

    i despise FPS games

baseball and football simulations; madden and whatever the hell they're calling the baseball games nowadays.

other random time-wasters such as online board and card games, as well as the occasional entertaining adventure game that shows up online somewhere.

unfortunately, i am presently restricted to the last category because my video card ceased to function last week and nothing runs on the backup i'm using

I've been playing a lot of Halo (FPS) lately, because it's what my roomates like to play. Words cannot express how bad I suck at that, but it's fun. GTA is just fun to play around with. As a kid, I used to play Sonic on Genesis for hours. I miss those games. Simple, and with as minimal use of the brain as possible.
"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love."

don't knock pokemon; it's an extraordinarily well designed game. i'd probably still be playing it with fervor had my gameboy not decided to eliminated my saved data on a pokemon silver version (i think that was in 2001), which somewhat dulled my enthusiasm.

I remembered a couple others, older ones: Descent I and II were pretty good, and Starsiege: Tribes is especially fun for multiplayer. I loved the old-school "bots" and deploying forcefields and all that cool stuff. At some point, I think I ran across Tribes 1 for free, but I'm not sure if that's still out there (legally, I mean).

I love Animal Crossing and Animal Crossing: Wild World. I also like the Harvest Moon games.

And I like any game with the Mario characters. We play Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 6, and we just got Super Princess Peach for DS, which is lots of fun.

    I love recommendations too!

RPGs, some FPS, RTS, and car racing. Above all, I like games where I can make improvements over time and see my progress
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

Minecraft was built by a Holographic thinker I think for holographic thinkers. It also appeals to a lot of other folks.

Many JRPG I think are a mix of Ni and Fe or Te. With often LII villains. Prime examples are Final Fantasy, and Chronos Trigger, Xenosaga, Xenoblade.

Xenosaga's developer name is Monolith Soft, a homage to Kubrick Monolith in 2001.

Also the first game was "The Will to Power", from Nietzsche's book. I think the Xenosaga/Xenoblade games are very heavily Ni.

Diablo 1/2/3 is Gamma all the way. Death metal stat grind.

Starcraft is beta/gamma solo micro/macro strategic play

Solo FPS has the same appeal to beta/gamma players.

Tactical FPS like counter-strike is more Beta, Delta.

World of Warcraft is aristocratic, the top Wow guilds imo are beta, the social interaction of Wow forms disciplined almost military like groups of players who invest 40+ hours a week to do co-operative actions. The leadership is secretive, often despotic and mostly sadistic, they engage in clannish behavior and competitions in all aspects of the game. The other side of the game is this huge diverse and expansive game world full of small things to explore and do which appeal to solo/group exploration with little or no competition and little to no risk. This appeals primarily to Delta quadra, but also appeals in small does to some alpha types(however they require some social engagement), it appeals to some gamma completionists.

Need to talk about Flow/Flower/Cloud/Journey games because I think this is a alpha/delta focused game, Jenova Chen I think is EII or ILE, probably ILE not EII. I'm not exactly sure which one. These game are about as pure a artistic experience as I've seen in a game, especially Journey, which is one of the most artistic games ever made.

RPGs, adventure and shooters, some sports, racing and tactical, anything well designed really. Though I’m currently limited to 3 PS2 games. Pathetic.

Is it sad that I've never played a true video game in my life? Meaning I have never owned any kind of gaming system ..

When I was @ friends' houses and I attempted playing Super Smash Bros... I failed so horribly!!! How do you even move your hands that fast to coordinate with the screen?!!? Ahh, so difficult.. I did not know what was going on. Does it take a lot of practice or something? =/

The only "game" I'd say I play is Sims...

racing and sports games mainly...When people come over they always ask if I like EA sports games with a lot of sarcasm since it's about 25 of the 40 or so games I have for my PS2. I pretty much have at least one of every sports game out there. I can play some rpg's but usually they are Military based. My favorites are all the "conflict" series, desert storm I and II, vietnam, global conflict. On a computer i'm a fan of unreal tournament etc but I don't play games on the computer often.

Video games as in games you play on the console, and computer games as in those you play on the PC. eunice, do you realise that most of the games available for consoles are also available for PC, and vice versa?

I can never understand people's fascination with them. Video games are more fun.
On which criteria are you basing this distinction? I'll admit that turn-based strategy and adventure games are lacking in video game consoles, but those two genres are only a small portion of the PC gaming platform.

I think she's making a distinction between AD&D and RTS style games, and console RPGs in general, maybe platformers also.

The computer games are more irrational, while their console counterparts tend to put more focus on rationality. However, there is also a strong T divide: is common in computer games, while is common in console games.

Anything that requires speed is ok, when I was younger I played Crash on play station 1 and then call of duty, but usually I don't play games
