The politeness of recently retired NBA star Tim Duncan is as legendary as his low post ability. Even when Duncan flipped off obtrusive fans, he did it with grace.

So it's fitting that, as a Wake Forest undergrad, Duncan co-authored a social psychology paper titled "Blowhards, Snobs and Narcissists: Interpersonal Reactions to Excessive Egotism." In its abstract, the paper stated, "Simply put, we don't like egotistical people."

This anecdote comes from an amusing Wall Street Journal article by Ben Cohen. The paper's lead author, social psychologist Mark Leary, told Cohen:

It's [the paper] a piece of lore inside social psychology. He's [Duncan] probably the best-paid person to write any psychological chapter or article ever.

Duncan may indeed be the highest-paid person to ever publish an academic psychology paper. However, he could have made much more money in his career if he wanted to. But he repeatedly gave up millions so that he could keep playing with his San Antonio Spurs teammates. Unlike most academics, Duncan actually applied his theoretical crusade to the real world.
