In the US, the whigs morphed into the republicans. At least, that's what I read. And the original democrat was Andrew Jackson (one of our worse presidents).
Ah, I see. Yes, now I recall...it is absolutely perverse that Lincoln was a Republican considering what the modern party stands for (even just in relation to the Democrats). (This is probably my opinion rather than a fact however!)
