this shows all kinds of different shamans and their healing work. honestly mind-blowing.

Werner Herzog's Lessons of Darkness. Easily my favorite film, let alone documentary.
Synopsis: "Detox or Die" provides an in-depth portrait of a small-time drug addict seeking redemption. Addicted to opiates for almost 20 years, film-maker David Graham Scott decides to opt for a quick fix. The radical detox agent ibogaine puts the user into a gut-wrenching hallucinatory state for 36 hours, from which he emerges cleansed of his addiction. But several fatalities have been reported in connection with the unlicensed drug, and Scott must weigh up the options before embarking on the trip of a lifetime. Broadcast as part of BBC1’s ONE life strand.

I recommend this one:

documentary on the significance of last meals before execution (in various cultures). can be a bit annoyingly "artistic" sometimes, and is generally a bummer, but still very interesting imo...

the kind of cruelty, suffering, and pain that those animals are subjected to is horrendous. yet, most people won't think of it when they order their minced chicken or bacon salad tomorrow for lunch at the store. i'm not a vegetarian and don't have any intention in rejecting all animal products, but watching this documentary has made me more determined in doing my research to make sure that the animal products come from a farm that treats animals humanely.

contains some nsfw bits
Gonna watch all of these with chromecast later. I LOVE documentaries.
That said, I don't have any to add right now since I mostly watch them on Netflix. However, I recommend Cutie and the Boxer, Living on One Dollar, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Gideon's Army, Fame High, and... I'll come back and edit this with more when I get home.

Wow I didn't realize that. That's harsh.
(link)Pastor Fred Waldron Phelps Sr. was excommunicated from the Westboro Baptist Church after advocating a kinder approach between church members. The excommunication occurred after the formation of a board of male elders in the church. The board had defeated Shirley Phelps-Roper, the church’s longtime spokeswoman, in a power struggle, and Fred Phelps Sr. called for kinder treatment of fellow church members.
The board then ejected Fred Phelps Sr., who founded the church in the 1950s.
(link)On the day that he was excommunicated, he stood outside of the front door of the church...he spoke words to this effect to the Equality House: 'You are good people.'

Gotta keep ahead in the cruelty curve if you want to stay in upper management of a cult it seems. Otherwise you get kicked out for being too soft by everyone else who was suffering at your hand before.
More on WBC is the documentary by Steve Drain, during the making of which he then converted.
Another good documentary is Going Clear by HBO. Pretty fair look at Scientology, without too much sensationalism.
