Exclamation What are words you overuse?

Three of mine are "seem", "quite", "really"...words that I must try to eliminate if I am to achieve my goal of being an innovative "Hip Hop" artist.

Which words do you pledge to eradicate or minimise from your vocabulary?

    "like" , "um", "really?"

I use them far too often in person. I say "like" almost in every sentence. I use "um" as a placeholder so people give me a chance to speak before they continue and I am not always comfortable with long pauses. I ask "really?" a lot when I already know the answers. They are habits I try to catch myself in. I am doing better.

Eample: "um, like, really?" It's annoying for me but no one has ever said it bothered them.

    "Shit-show"

I see at lot of live performances and I just love how literal this phrase is in that context.

In my writing: "heh". It represents when I menally chuckle or snort. In real life it might come out as a quick blow-out of air, a sudden diaphragm movement, or a slight lifting of one side of a smile.

I also tend to use hedging words. Things like seems, might, could be, or, etc. The idea that this is one possibility of many, and while I might think it's what is going on I am still aware that there could be other reasons or influences I am not aware of. It means I don't have a firm stance on the subject, and am open to other possibilities. And with this, words like "not necessarily" when someone says that something is...but i see other possibilities available.

Unfortunately, it's usually difficult for me to have a firm stance on something, hence why I consider it over-used by me.

Like. Like, why do I do that? It's like so annoying, but I can't like stop myself.
You seek a great fortune, you three who are now in chains. You will find a fortune, though it will not be the one you seek.
But first you must travel a long and difficult road, a road fraught with peril.
You shall see things, wonderful to tell. You shall see a... cow... on the roof of a cotton house. And, oh, so many startlements.
I cannot tell you how long this road shall be, but fear not the ob-stacles in your path, for fate has vouchsafed your reward.
Though the road may wind, yea, your hearts grow weary, still shall ye follow them, even unto your salvation

Instead of making concrete plans, I tend to say, "maybe, we'll see". My friend's give me one of these cuz they know it usually means, no. I am attempting to stop the maybes and say yes or no but it all depends on how I feel and that could change on the day of event so I use my catchphrase a lot.

Aw, awesome, awful, cool, amazing, tend, have, had, would. These last four are conscious attempts at softening what I'm saying so I don't sound too bossy, critical, or absolute.

I also learned a trick from some teenage girls I used to work with. If I say, "I feel like..." in front of a criticism (and word it in a "lighter" way) people tend to respond much better. Example from when I worked in food service: Instead of saying, "You're not sealing the cheese into the crust well enough," I'd say, "I feel like the cheese might leak out while it's cooking. What do you think?" Sometimes it's frustrating that I have to "soften" the way I say things, but whatever works.

(and honestly, it doesn't really bother me)

They differ a bit from one register to another and kind of depend on what I'm writing/speaking for.... but as a general impression I can list the following vocables:

    quite
    seem/appear
    probably
    kind of/somewhat/sort of
    generally/usually
    slightly/vaguely
    really/actually/indeed
    though/however
    since
although (as connectors ...and implicitly a particular kind of clauses)
    related to
    definitely/obviously
    fascinating/captivating/incredible
    guess/assume/suppose
    allegedly
    porn
    fuck
    tendency
    folks
    ....

All the typical waffle words: basically, usually, actually, kinda, sort of, seems, probably, I think, yeah, maybe, well, ok

Gotta go Strunk and White and cut out those unnecessary adverbs. But often these words are a symptom of talking about things you don't really know about, rather than being a problem in themselves.
