Please help me compile a new mixtape of sonic landscapes
Al Stewart and I Like Trains are two artists who are known for most\all their songs being about such matters...E.S. Posthumus have made Neoclassical (or whatever genre it is) tracks named after archaeological sites although in their case the link is more tenuous...any others?
My fave Al Stewart song is probably Nostradamus, which is probably going somewhat wayward straight away, but he was at least historical...:

Peter Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture

Gavin Bryars - The Sinking of the Titanic
The story about the band may be true, but what they played as they ultimately hit the water is probably unknowable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sinking_of_the_Titanic
