Beta Fe IM and EM are very different. Although both focus on emotion, they use these emotions differently, and for very different purposes. Fe IM tries to emulate, internally, another person's emotional state. Then it modulates the Fe user's feelings in response to it. "This is what they feel... how do you feel about it? What, if anything, should you do about it? How would they likely respond?" Fe EM, in contrast, wants to observe emotion; it does not want to feel it necessarily. It particularly likes observing positive expressions of emotion -- it will not ask, how could a person be feeling given that they have little money? How would I feel in that case?, because that is the domain of Fe IM alone. Fe EM asks, this is how a person feels, what can I do? What should I do? But it is not a sympathy, only an empathy. That is perhaps the clearest distinguishment between them: Fe IM sympathizes, Fe EM empathizes.
