I suppose you could be made a mod temporarily. I've started doing Alpha, and I'm putting the stuff into an excel database. I have two columns - one with names, the second with ages (in years).

Everyone must give their ages at registration - he's using those. His ethical worry probably has more to do with looking at our private information than turning people into statistics.wait I don't get it

It actually asks for your birthday, which it uses to make sure that you're old enough to use the forum. But it stores it as well.Did we? I would have lied.

Oh, I have no problem with seeing people as statistics. When you register with the forum, I don't believe the forum keeps your DOB info - you have to add it again later. But I can Transcend whatever privacy option you choose in your profile - for example, if you put your full DOB and choose 'Display Only Age', I can still see your full DOB!
No, it defaults to saving your DOB and hiding it.

Well if people don't want their ages to be used, perhaps the project should be dropped. But...and it's a big but...wouldn't your age remain hidden, as we are getting an average age of all members, and perhaps of each type? For the types with only a few self-typings, we could simply not calculate an average.

I am not convinced this would be satisfactory. We were only getting data from about 30% of profiles against people's will...also starting a thread would result in less reliable data, I think.you might still do this.(and a voluntary survey?)
So basically, we need a Russian study. The American community isn't large enough for a good sample.
