Yeah. I even carry a little calculator to compute everything.
I don't usually need to read the labels, as I have a pretty consistent set of foods that I eat. Plus, you generally know what's good and what isn't, so paying attention to little details like that isn't too important. And counting calories is just stupid; eat when you're hungry.

When I use to work out I would look at them to see how many calories and protein something had, and that was about the only time I bothered to look.
hell, nutritional labels and this forum are about the only things I read these days.
I haven't really felt a need to get all obsessed with it though.
only when i'm watching my weight. but then i can be quite anal retentive.

I've been trying to educate myself on nutrition for nearly two decades now. It's frustrating how much misinformation is out there. And how even two textbooks will blatantly contradict each other. I couldn't even name all the books I've read, and I can't say I follow any one of them to the letter.
But beyond the fact that our understanding of what the body needs from food and how we extract nutrients from what we eat remains highly inexact ... there's also all the obfuscation that occurs when companies make processed food. Did you know that when you see "natural flavor" on a label, it probably means MSG? Or if you see Disodium Gualynate and Disodium Anosinate on a label, it also means MSG? But because Monosodium Glutamate has been categorized a certain way by the FDA, companies can get around admitting that certain ingredients are identical to it. I've also come across long lists of additives meant to pump up the vitamin and mineral percentages that come from dubious sources.
Once upon a time, I read the nutrition label religiously. But the more I read about nutrition, the more I started to think it's all bullshit. The two things I bother to look for are sodium and fat, and I only worry about fat because of my pancreatitis. Otherwise, I want to be able to recognize and approve of all everything on the ingredient list. A bunch of six-syllable chemical names and I will most likely leave it on the shelf.

that's basically a little rule of thumb i use as well. if it's all stuff i can't recognize, i'll probably put it back. as a result of that, a great portion of my diet is rather simple in chemical composition. re: the rest of your post. i did not know that legally "natural flavor" could include MSG. they are then required to report that on the label, i'd assume? probably only in certain amounts.

Yeah, it helps to be attentive to them. But, in general if i have to read a label i know it's not all that natural. I try to shop mostly around the edges of supermarkets i.e fruit n veg section. Unless lets say I pick up a tin of light non oil packed tuna.. I will look to make sure they haven't skimmed the omega-3 because sometimes they do and it says 0 fat. Or, i'll look at the carb count on the back of soymilk to see if they've added a shitload of sugar as usual. The only thing I like to keep count of is protein, the more the merrier.
