    Default Simone Weil

French philosopher, mystic, and political activist.

After her graduation from formal education, Weil became a teacher. She taught intermittently throughout the 1930s, taking several breaks due to poor health and to devote herself to political activism, work that would see her assisting in the trade union movement, taking the side of the Anarchists known as the Durruti Column in the Spanish Civil War, and spending more than a year working as a labourer, mostly in auto factories, so she could better understand the working class.

Taking a path that was unusual among twentieth-century left-leaning intellectuals, she became more religious and inclined towards mysticism as her life progressed. Weil wrote throughout her life, though most of her writings did not attract much attention until after her death.

Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring. Imaginary good is boring; real good is always new, marvelous, intoxicating.

All sins are attempts to fill voids.

Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.

A beautiful woman looking at her image in the mirror may very well believe the image is herself. An ugly woman knows it is not.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Love is not consolation. It is light.

Human existence is so fragile a thing and exposed to such dangers that I cannot love without trembling.

To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul.

All the natural movements of the soul are controlled by laws analogous to those of physical gravity. Grace is the only exception. Grace fills empty spaces, but it can only enter where there is a void to receive it, and it is grace itself which makes this void. The imagination is continually at work filling up all the fissures through which grace might pass.

If we go down into ourselves, we find that we possess exactly what we desire.

Everything beautiful has a mark of eternity.

Human beings are so made that the ones who do the crushing feel nothing; it is the person crushed who feels what is happening. Unless one has placed oneself on the side of the oppressed, to feel with them, one cannot understand.

Whether the mask is labeled fascism, democracy, or dictatorship of the proletariat, our great adversary remains the apparatus—the bureaucracy, the police, the military. Not the one facing us across the frontier of the battle lines, which is not so much our enemy as our brothers' enemy, but the one that calls itself our protector and makes us its slaves. No matter what the circumstances, the worst betrayal will always be to subordinate ourselves to this apparatus and to trample underfoot, in its service, all human values in ourselves and in others.

Love of God is pure when joy and suffering inspire an equal degree of gratitude.

The sea is not less beautiful in our eyes because we know that sometimes ships are wrecked by it.

We have to endure the discordance between imagination and fact. It is better to say, “I am suffering,” than to say, “This landscape is ugly.

Do not allow yourself to be imprisoned by any affection. Keep your solitude. The day, if it ever comes, when you are given true affection, there will be no opposition between interior solitude and friendship, quite the reverse. It is even by this infallible sigh that you will recognize it.

    Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer.

There is something else which has the power to awaken us to the truth. It is the works of writers of genius. They give us, in the guise of fiction, something equivalent to the actual density of the real, that density which life offers us every day but which we are unable to grasp because we are amusing ourselves with lies.

I'd pin her roughly as a 541 sx/sp for enneagram. ILI makes sense for her Sociotype.

    Not sure about ILI.

From the material Ashlesha is posting, it sounds like she was really bad at taking care of her health and appearance, in an LII fashion.

ILI is much less likely to starve themselves to death. Well to be fair was she anorexic? That can affect any type I would guess.

Don't know enough about her to really say though, right now I'm going with LII. I'm just getting weak, unvalued Se.

541 in enneagram seems legit, she seems like she had social instinct as first or second though. People who are heavily involved with politics and causes often do.

As far as Simone goes, LII is fine, possibly EII, but I'm saying INTj first. Def some sensing issues going on and she seems sweet like a childlike alpha. She also sounds woke so plus plus.

Sad she died, she needed care, but it also sounds like she chose to hermatize.

Romantic political activist, "at 10 years of age, she declared herself a Bolshevik. In her late teens, she became involved in the workers' movement. She wrote political tracts, marched in demonstrations, and advocated workers' rights. At this time, she was a Marxist, pacifist, and trade unionist."

The quotes are rather romantic, bad at maintaining appearance -- everything superficially seems to fit with IEI.
It would be interesting to also type her brother Andre Weil who was a well-known mathematician (the quote suggests he was more aware of Se than she was). EIE is also worth considering.

"In 1936, despite her professed pacifism, she travelled to the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side, and joined the anarchist columns of Buenaventura Durruti. She even took a rifle, but was expelled from combat line by her comrades, as she was extremely short-sighted, and they feared Simone shooting one of them. She hit a pot of boiling liquid because of her sightness problem, had noticeable burns, and her family came to Spain to bring her back home. During her stay in the Aragon front, she send some chronicles to the French publication: 'Le Libertaire'. She identified herself as an anarchist,[25] and upon arriving in Spain, sought out the anti-fascist commander Julián Gorkin, asking to be sent on a mission as a covert agent, to rescue the prisoner Joaquín Maurín. Gorkin refused, saying she would almost certainly be sacrificing herself for nothing, as it would be most unlikely she could pass as a Spaniard. Weil replied that she had "every right"[26] to sacrifice herself if she chose, but after arguing for more than an hour, she was unable to convince Gorkin to give her the assignment. Instead she joined a unit of the Sébastien Faure Century, which specialised in high-risk "commando"[27]-style engagements."

My view is that there's a lot of Ni in what she says. I could also see IJ temperament but this is mixed in with strong religious views and asceticism and I'm not sure how much to separate the two. Te/Ti isn't clear to me.

Fe is a part of it too, IEIs seem to vary on that. The quote was "if only she had combed her hair, worn stockings and high heels"
