    Default type benchmark project 08

creating another type benchmark list is an idea that's been floating around for a while.

i say we should do another one, if for no other reason than the last one had a pitiful 35 typings, with exactly five members contributing more than 2 typings.

if more interest can be generated in the project a much more substantial list could be compiled.

I would probably contribute at least a few typings.

Yeah. I'm sure about a few people myself. How do we start?

    download http://www.socionics.us/reference/Benchmark_form.xls.

i'm presuming we'll be using that format. of course, this project hasn't actually been confirmed by anyone yet and if it goes forward the details have yet to be worked out, but suffice to say you'll have at least a couple weeks to produce your list.

    Wait!

If you decide to do this, do NOT do <last name>, <first name> format. It was a pain in the ass to decipher the results. Just write famous people's names as they are normally written, and make sure to spell forum members' names correctly. Using former forum names is OK.

I'll ask Rick to change the instructions.

Why not create a more permanent benchmarking website or something, where everybody can type people wiki style, a more automated version of your consensus list?

That wasn't the whole point of automating it.

    1. It makes the possibility of human error much less likely. Name variants might be lost - how am I supposed to know that "Constantine I" and "Constantine the Great" are the same person?
    2. It reduces tedium. Programming is (usually) fun, manually merging spreadsheets is not. Convergences would be especially painful to compute.
    3. It scales.

yeah, but if you looked through the lists to make sure that nobody said Smith, Michael instead of Michael Smith it wouldn't hurt anything.

If people want to do a new benchmark list now, then let's go for it. It'll take a bit of time to change the instructions and put up announcements. Ganin's typings will be included, of course, as well as those printed in that book that came out last June (is there someone who has the book who can type up the typings for this?) and anyone else's who wants to. That will reduce the influence of groupthink that tends to accumulate in any single forum. Typings that are "way out there" won't influence the benchmark list, anyway.

Sadly, this is not really true if only a few people from the forum participate, like last time.

I'm not sure what the precise goal of the benchmark is, and perhaps in Russia it works better because - presumably - people are speaking of the same "socionics"; here we have several different "schools", whether they are seen as such or not, and that will lead to several "way out there" typings.

on the other hand, ganin's typings largely affected nothing because they were largely actors that nobody had ever heard of -- or who i had never heard of at least. and since most of ganin's typings are wrong, it isn't likely that they'll really have any kind of an effect.

Well, the effect would only be to remove a few people for whom there was only a partial consensus among forum members; it wouldn't tip the balance towards wacko typings or anything.

I think fears about wacko typings affecting the benchmark list are pretty unfounded. The benchmark formula handles them nicely. In the Russian speaking community there are more schools and more typing variety than here, and yet the final result is very conservative.

How about we announce the start date of this project March 1st and the collection deadline March 31st?

What we should do is take all of socionics.us' typings and look at every one of them, deciding if they fit the bill or not. If the general consensus is that they are a certain type, then we should record them on the benchlist.

Also, in the 2007 edition, why is UDP an LII, and FDG an SLE? How old is it?

no. for one thing, that seriously restricts the number of people that you can put in.

it was done in may of 2007. in both cases those were the general type consensuses at the time. interestingly, neither UDP nor FDG have much of an established consensus at the present juncture.

What's the point of having "benchmark" list of crappy typings?

Looking at how lot of people type here, list like that would be completely worthless.

    reminder:

this project still exists. please endeavor to send your lists to contact@socionics.us by monday or tuesday. the more participation, the better.

if this has been completely off of your radar screen, you still have time to slap something together in the next couple days.

i apologize to anybody who i told unequivocally that the list was due by the end of today; it doesn't seem like that's happening.

but i hope to have it done within a week or so.

Ah geez, sorry for the delay. I'll put something together and get it to you by Wednesday or so. I've got a test tomorrow that will probably decimate my life if I don't buckle down for it.
