Hey, there ain't no shame in that. If I can find a guy with this face-shape as highly attractive then you're allowed to have your tastes too.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a select couple of composites that people will be drawn to that aren't their own.

I think it's more likely that most people will react positively to the composites of others, but still not favour them. We all prefer some facial features over others and this will probably result in a clear trend throughout the people we choose. When I compare both composites you made, I'd actually prefer the first one. Even though the women I added are very attractive individually, they may have smoothed out "that certain something". The changes are not fundamental, but the first composite looks considerably more expressive and likeable to me.

I think this is known, but anyway:
fewer people used for a composite --> more individual features --> more polarized reactions
more people used --> smoothed out features --> somewhat positive reactions, but mostly indifferent

I do agree that the first one is more appealing, but I think that could be due to several factors, not the least of which being the faces used. I tried to experiment with different facial expressions for each of the faces to generate different outcomes, but there's still some changes I can make to improve it. If you look at Ashton's composites for example, both use the exact same people but the second one has some faces swapped out for more positive expressions, and the results were quite dramatic. I'm sure there's further editing I can do to yours, as well as some others if they express dissatisfaction with how theirs came out (Kim comes to mind here as well, maybe munenori if he comes up with a different list). That said, some people's facial expressions don't have that much variety, so in some cases you're kinda stuck with what you get at face value.

Other than that, I find that eye contact with the camera can make a huge difference in perceived attractiveness. If they're unfocused or cross-eyed/wall-eyed then it can convey a sense of disengagement with the audience, so while the physical shape of the face may be appealing it'll still be passed up. This is why I like to fix the direction of a composite's gaze, but it's a pretty time consuming process and I haven't gotten it down pact yet. The program I'm using also has different algorithms for how the composites are constructed, and I try to mess with these and find which ones work best. The last big factor I can see is quality of the image itself. If the fine lines are fuzzy and details and the contrast is blurred, it won't "pop" as much as one with sharper lines.

I think the newest faces used in yours Pa3s are notably less muted than the ones you selected previously, and since the number of faces total went up by about 50% it, for all intents and purposes, became a very different person.

    How does this look?

EDIT: just edited mine again because I discovered the sharpen function exists oh boy oh boy. Probably way oversaturated it but I don't care

Yeah, I think you're right. The image quality/facial expression of the individual pictures certainly influences the outcome in a significant way. And I saw that you used 20 people for your composite and still find enough individual features to find it attractive, so I guess the argument of "too many faces used" might not be appropriate. But maybe you were more consistent in your choice, so the features you liked could be found in most men and therefore, also in the finished composite without being watered down too much.

The result might be better if I made an actual ranking and only the top 8 were used (that would be quite difficult, though).

I didn't expect that kind of consistency since I don't think very much about what people look like.

    ohhh i like scapegraces.

the other day a couple men popped in my head that would be more suitable for this kind of experiment - compelling in vibe/personality & not just pretty - and i was going to keep them in mind but now i forgot already.

Have your dogs set up a selection of male faces and then note which images cause your pupils to dilate when viewed, indicating (sexual) interest. A pattern of preferred features will emerge.

Are you making all of your templates in the same order? If you change the order of point delineation then you get a mean case of the blobs.

so this means, you must delineate in order image1.jpg, then image2.jpg, then image3.jpg, and so forth?

also: did you auto-delineate and leave the lines alone, or did you manually fine-tune the results (adjusting lines & points, etc.)?

When you make your templates from scratch, you have to punch in each point in the same place in the same order (left pupil, right pupil, center of mouth, etc). What the program does is generate an average of each set of points, where a set comprises of points created at different points within the order. This means that the 1st point you create in each template gets averaged between each other, and same for the 2nd, 3rd, and so on. When each point is put in the same relative area on the face, these averages blend together evenly; when a couple are out of order, the program morphs the face so that the points you put in add up, but without respect to what part of the face you placed them on. Hence, blobman.

I create my templates in the following order (it's not terribly efficient, but this is roughly how faceresearch.org does theirs):

    • Left pupil
      Right pupil
Center of mouth, between lips (if mouth is open, then right below the upper lip)
      Bottom of lower lip
      Left corner of mouth
      Right corner of mouth
      Bottom of nose
      Left nostril
      Right nostril
      Outer corner of left/right eye
      Inner corner of left/right eye
Top + bottom of left eye (at the iris)
Top + bottom of right eye
      Outer end of left/right eyebrow
      Inner end of left/right eyebrow
      Top of left/right eyebrow arch
Point where top of left/right ear meets face
Point where bottom of left/right ear meets face
      Left/right jaw hinge
      Bottom of chin
Left/right point on image where neck and jawline intersect
      Top of forehead
      Left/right temple

It's a shit ton of work, but once you get into the flow it goes pretty quick.

Also fwiw I don't do any auto-delineation. I think I've seen the function but never messed with it, or it never worked or something. I should probably mess with it, might make everything go quicker if it actually works.

and wow, I didn't realize you did it all manually. what I was doing was auto-delineating the images and then editing them to be more precise (as the auto-delineations often draw the lines and points way off where they should be), creating different numbers of points and lines for certain images - thus giving me the unsatisfactory results.

hmmm, that was very difficult. I found that i had to spend quite some time looking through the images so that i could assign characters to their faces. I did one for male and one for female. I did attempt to mix up the genders but found that i preferred them separate...which is interesting (to me). Also i noted my female was fairly similar to korpsy's and my male fairly similar to dolphins.

All in all i was not overly satisfied, the images do not have any great meaning.
