Projection is ordinary. Person A projects at person B, hoping tovalidate something about person A by the response of person B. However, person B, not wanting to be an obejct of someone elses ego and guarding against existential terror constructs a personality which protects his ego and maintain a certain sense of a robust and real self that is different and separate from person A. Sadly, this robust and real self, cut off by defenses of character from the rest of the world, is quite vulnerable and fragile given that it is imaginary and propped up through external feed back. Person B is dimly aware of this and defends against it all the more, even desperately projecting his anxieties back onto person A, with the hope of shoring up his ego with salubrious validation. All of this happens without A or B acknowledging it, of course. Because to face up to it consciously is shocking, in that this is all anybody is doing or can do and it seems absurd when you realize how pathetic it is.

You reminded of me of an old movie called "Blind Beast". It was really disturbing and I doubt I will watch ever again. It was like the only thing on at 3 a.m. before I got netflix, hulu, amazon, etc... I don't even watch cable anymore. I should get rid of it.

    NSFW

"Clockwork Orange" and "Lair of the White Worm" are good.

Here are a couple more that are less disturbing.

I have watched all but "Blind Beast" multiple times.

Probably well-known, I dunno (I don't keep up), but the Ian McKellen adaptation of Richard III was brilliant. I've always loved both the play and the early 20th century.

I recommend Marmoulak if you're interested in Middle Eastern culture [EDIT: and Beta viewpoints thereon]. It satirizes virtually all aspects of Iranian society's attitudes towards religion and was banned by the clerical establishment shortly after its release. You may also appreciate the uplifting message at end, contingent on your inclination towards spirituality.

Dunno what constitutes as avant-garde, but The White Ribbon, is another interesting movie by Haneke.

This one is much older, but essentially truly avant-garde in an aesthetic sense.

Fireworks (1947) is a homoeroticexperimental film by Kenneth Anger. Filmed in his parents' home in Beverly Hills, Californiaover a long weekend while they were away, the film stars Anger and explicitly explores themes of homosexuality and sado-masochism.[1] It is the earliest of his works to survive.

My contribution but it's really hard to sit through:

"One of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century, Sergei Parajanov's "Color of the Pomegranate," a biography of the Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova (King of Song) reveals the poet's life more through his poetry than a conventional narration of important events in Sayat Nova's life. We see the poet grow up, fall in love, enter a monastery and die, but these incidents are depicted in the context of what are images from Sergei Parajanov's imagination and Sayat Nova's poems, poems that are seen and rarely heard. Sofiko Chiaureli plays 6 roles, both male and female, and Sergei Parajanov writes, directs, edits, choreographs, works on costumes, design and decor and virtually every aspect of this revolutionary work void of any dialog or camera movement."
