The Barnum or Forer effect is the tendency for people to judge that general, universally valid statements about personality are actually specific descriptions of their own personalities. A "universally valid" statement is one that is true of everyone—or, more likely, nearly everyone. It is not known why people tend to make such misjudgments, but the effect has been experimentally reproduced.

The psychologist Paul Meehl named this fallacy "the P.T. Barnum effect" because Barnum built his circus and dime museum on the principle of having something for everyone. It is also called "the Forer effect" after its discoverer, the psychologist Bertram R. Forer, who modestly dubbed it "the fallacy of personal validation".

Because @FreelancePoliceman thinks I'm well adjusted I thought I'd share this little snippet of my life.

So, I started hearing voices, having orgasms from nothing, and seeing angels and demons. I started to screw up at work...I couldn't tell the difference between the voices and my co-workers and boss. They were going to fire me, so I quit and filed for social security. I didn't want to stay on social security, I just needed it until I could fix my head. I have two kids to take care of.

Social security had two psychologist's aids test me. Not a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, but their assistants. They denied me. I went home and beat the shit out of myself so that the emergency room would have record of it when social security checked(my mom of course took me to the emergency room). To prove that I am crazy. btw worst pain I've ever had...don't punch yourself in the jaw because it takes a long time to heal. I reapplied and got social security.

The day after I got social security a strange teenage boy came and stood on my porch and recited the rules of fight club loudly. I stayed quiet in the house until he left. He definitely wasn't helping my schizophrenia.. Wtf.

Why are there so many homeless schizophrenic people....???? Gee I wonder. NOT. And btw I love my children more than life itself.

@chriscorey, for clarification, when I said "well-adjusted" I meant relative to the rest of this forum. You're still in the madhouse, don't worry.

Did you consider inviting the boy in for dinner?

@chriscorey as you haven't stalked and/or threatened to violently stab anyone yet, you're slightly better adjusted than other schizophrenics who post here.

    LOL! Touche.

You know I didn't think of inviting him in because he was a stranger, but maybe I should have. I haven't seen him since.

Demons be stabbing me. Once I limped for a week because of an "imagined wound" I wouldn't think of doing that to anyone! Hurts.

Out of curiosity, can you stab the demons back or find a way to control them / redefine them into something non-demonic?

Whenever I have lucid dreams, I can't violate the rules of the dream world. For example, I can't pass through walls, so I have to use doors. Is your experience of schizophrenia similar to this?

I stopped acknowledging the demons and only spoke with the angel(positive thoughts). Now the demons only speak the future... 2 years ago I kept watching "Outbreak" over and over again and I told my mom a disease was coming. She didn't believe me, and then... Scared the pants off of her..

I see angels and demons as positive and negative. Yin and Yang.

I feel like something is in the air. I'm starting to feel something rise. A restless anxious energy. It reminds me of this scene in ghostbusters.

    Now it's Lasers in Spaaaace!

Well, hell, why not? If the government can print money, why not take some of it?

    P.S.
I never realized until I saw this clip that Robert Wagner is ESE.

TV I want to see (that exists):

The Lord of the Rings (2022)
    The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
    Loki (2021)
    WandaVision (2021)
Long Way Up (2020) (I liked the other Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman stuff)
    Watchmen (2019)
    Good Omens (2019)
    Bodyguard (2018)
    Dark (2017-2020)
    The White Princess (2017)
American Gods (2017-2021) (the book is very good)
    Urban Myths (2017)
What We Do in the Shadows (2016) (I HATED the film, but the TV series has Tilda Swinton in it so...)
    Stranger Things (2016-)
11.22.63 (2016) (The Stephen King book was very good)
The Crown (2016-) (that doesn't immediately appeal to me, actually)
The Man in the High Castle (2015-2019) (I don't think I've read the book, but I'd probably like it)
    Fargo (2014-)
    Cosmos (the various series) (1980, 2014, 2020)
    The Fall (2013-2016)
House of Cards (2013-2018) (Kevin Spacey seems like a good villain IMO)
    Line of Duty (2013-2021)
Six Feet Under (2001-2005) (I think I may actually have seen this, but I forget)

Stuff I've seen that I recommend (in progress):
    Clarkson's Farm (2021) (Documentary, Reality-TV)
    Dracula (2020) (Drama, Horror)
    Roadkill (2020) (Drama, Thriller)
    Chernobyl (2019-2019) (Drama, History, Thriller)
This Time with Alan Partridge (2019-) (Comedy, Talk-Show)
His Dark Materials (2019-) (Adventure, Drama, Family)

A Very English Scandal (2018) (Biography, Comedy, Crime)
Killing Eve (2018-2022) (Action, Adventure, Drama)
    Strike (2017-) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
    Howards End (2017) (Drama, Romance)
The Grand Tour (2016-) (Comedy, Talk-Show) (I haven't actually seen most episodes yet. OK, so the three presenters can often be inane.)
War & Peace (2016) (Drama, History, Romance)
The Night Manager (2016) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
    Unforgotten (2015-) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
Wolf Hall (2015) (Biography, Drama, History)
    The Casual Vacancy (2015) (Drama)
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015) (Fantasy, History, War)
    1864 (2014) (Drama, Fantasy, History)
Inside No. 9 (2014-) (Comedy, Drama, Horror)
Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe (2013-2015) (Comedy)
    Hinterland (2013-2016) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
The Village (2013) (Drama) (Heimat is much better however.)
    Broadchurch (2013-2017) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
Father Brown (2013-) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
The Hollow Crown (2012-2016) (Drama, History, War)

Game of Thrones (2011-2019) (Action, Adventure, Drama)
Downton Abbey (2010-2015) (Drama, Romance) (I still need to see the later stuff, plus the film, although I feel bored with it.)
    Borgen (2010-2022) (Drama)
    Sherlock (2010-2017) (Crime, Drama, Mystery)
Dirk Gently (2010-2012) (Comedy, Crime, Sci-Fi)
