    Default The Music Discussion

No one seems to do music associative typing (or poetry or much anything besides pictures), which I find a shame because as I said, I don't really care about visual arts much at all and haven't developed a taste other than saying what I think a picture stands for and how pretty or not it seems to me, along with how much it makes me imagine things I like (I'll probably develop that more as time goes on). But music? I'm obsessed with that, I like seeing operas and recitals and concerts, I like talking with people for hours at a time about music, I like blasting it loud nearly every minute of the day that I'm not trying to listen to what someone's saying, I like to play it and sing it and analyze it and even try to write it.

I want an echt discussion here, hence the title, and not just y'all typing moi, but if I don't lead no one shall follow so let's go.

These kinds of things are my favorite to listen to:

    http://youtu.be/4_qPicqrdPk
    https://youtu.be/ZBQcLZ7d5e4
http://youtu.be/wvLMoRhKOzM (You don't know how long it took me to find a non-instrumentalized version. I hate it when people do that.)
    https://youtu.be/UWztdlpRk8E
http://youtu.be/SQk5ZiWXg0Y (This version is better than the most popular one. The most popular one has the tenor as Bruno Walter, who largely doesn't sound like he understands a word of what he's saying even if Ferrier is good).

A bit lighter, but still dramatic:

https://youtu.be/es5ahEkhKvU (Yeah, Pavarotti is overrated. He sounds audibly strained on every version of this song by him I heard. Fritz Wunderlich is the greatest lyric tenor, but people want their music to sound Italian and aside from often switching the language, these Germanic and Scandinavian singers use different-sounding technique. I've heard some really goo Italian bel canto tenors too but somehow they generally aren't more popular than Pavarotti for whatever reason.)
    http://youtu.be/5XP5RP6OEJI

Sometimes I want more lyrical things too, based on how I feel at the moment, but I think the heavier music is what I tend to listen to more:

    http://youtu.be/R8AD75_sNJM
http://youtu.be/xK-UFwM69K8 (Sometimes heavier people sing lighter music as well. No one is one-dimensional regarding music it seems.)
    http://youtu.be/O_m7eNyWfs4

I also like string instrument music some, but not quite as much as vocal music or orchestra. I used to be utterly obsessed with Jacqueline du Pré:

http://youtu.be/llB7NaWLUc4 (Oh God this is the best one)
    http://youtu.be/LmZqHrJCXAk

I frankly don't like it when I say I like classical music and ask for a music album with concertos, symphonies, or opera and get Chopin piano music or, even better, people playing Christmas carols on classical instruments, because apparently that's the same thing. There is more variation in "classical music" than all of popular music, yet somehow rock, pop and country are super different while Chopin and Wagner are the same. I also asked one of my roommates if she'd be OK with me blasting opera arias and symphonies and such out loud and she said "well, classical music helps you go to sleep". How do you sleep through something like that...

Also, the above is not near a complete list of my preferences. I just didn't finish because on my schedule it was about time to go off and do something else (the very important and serious task of eating a meal. To be fair, I hadn't eaten all day except for one glass of milk due to needing that time to do work, so it probably was important for me to go eat at that time). I'm not sure if I even can finish since I like too many pieces and get bored from only the same few over and over, and often something I last listened to becomes my favorite. (However, I will always have a thing for loudly listening to Starke Scheite right before I have to go through something I consider an ordeal. I'm not sure how I got in that habit but I did.)

What kinds of music do other people here listen to?

Edit: I accidentally posted this in the wrong subforum, would a mod or admin please move it one up?

@Olga has done some "associative typing" in regards music I think, and @silke has made lists of music videos I think for enneagram types, variants, and Socionics types (?).

School of Associative Socionics website: http://socionics4you.com/?lang=en
    silke's enenagram article: http://www.the16types.info/vbulletin...and-Interviews
oh, there's this page on the wiki too: http://wikisocion.org/en/index.php?title=Music

So you're not going to post any music you like, just that a small amount of associative typing with music has been done? That's not much of a discussion.

    oh, I'm sorry...

I recently posted a list of my top 100 or so favorite musicians (by one measure) in the your favorite music artist/band? thread and I've posted in the what are you listening to? thread a fair number of times too...and I've posted a select number of songs in the Songs that describe you thread also (true, not strictly songs that I "like", but I think I only posted that I do or have liked).

I'll post some general observations another time.

Oh @hag, that's by far my favorite version on the Internet, but it's often a pain if you just want the song because there's that (long) bit of talking before. Sometimes you want the whole opera/a scene and sometimes you just want music. I'm glad I don't seem to have offended anyone with my liking Wagner at least. On another site I had someone accuse me of wanting to gas the Jews or something equally unsavory for that (thankfully most everyone else pointed out to him that that's not really how it works).

I pretty much listen to the same pool of music that I've been exploring for like two years, even if I get tired of the same stuff I just look at the 100+ other tracks and hidden side projects from the same kinda people. I wonder when I'll move on.

Also I occasionally listen to lots of metal stuff, melodic death, ambient, doom, stoner, prog... whatever. I do this when I feel emotionally stale or bored, as my other music typically doesn't do much for me emotionally, just mentally really. : p

I'm not sure of any pattern in music I like besides not many containing lyrics unless they are abstract enough to be ignorable and just appreciated for aesthetic. I do hate lyrics that relate to real life, for example the newest Blink 182 album is just complete shit because of how dumb the lyrics are... its like the most basic style of music, I don't know why anyone would enjoy it (my brother keeps listening to it Im so fucking annoyed - _ -) People might complain about my repetitive danceable music being fake and basic but there's a difference between ambient emotion and abstract emotion (or whatever you'd call it). I guess I'm not as appreciative of abstract emotion (interpreting lyrics and applying them to myself) but really enjoy feeling the emotion instead through the use of music and maybe making up my own stories based on how the song changes. That's actually why I love more instrumental music the best: it lets me create what i want with my own imagination, so it feels more personal.~

this isn't the best selection imo but idk what to choose:

    why? it's happy and danceable.~

why? It's amazing. ^_^ I refer to it as Floydian Doom Metal. (pardon my Obsessive Categorization Disorder... hehe I just did it again.)

    why? It's beautiful.

why? it tells a tragic but not too hopeless story.

@Chryssie, I was about to class you as ISTp based on your music preference but then I saw INFx This is definitely not INFx music. INFp music tends to be more similar to the classical things I posted (not so much percussion, lots of harmony, dramatic moods) and INFj music I think tends to be like New Age music/electronica with not much of a beat and lots of wistful and/or soulful feelings rather than fast dance music. I think there is a tendency to assume xxxp are xNxx in many cases due to the lack of conventional structure. I also think xxFx would prefer music with lyrics since it has people in it.
