    Default John F. Nash, mathematician

John Forbes Nash, Jr. - an American mathematician whose works in game theory, differential geometry, and partial differential equations have provided insight into the forces that govern chance and events inside complex systems in daily life. His theories are used in market economics, computing, evolutionary biology, artificial intelligence, accounting, politics and military theory. Serving as a Senior Research Mathematician at Princeton University during the latter part of his life, he shared the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with game theorists Reinhard Selten and John Harsanyi.

What is the type of mathematician John F. Nash Jr.? It seems to be that either LII or ILI is obvious, but I have heard some other odd typings, such as EII. This topic has undoubtedly been brought up before, yet no reasonable conclusion seems to have been reached in any of these said cases. So what type is he? Do you think his type in real life correlates accurately to the type portrayed in the movie A Beautiful Mind?

    Here's his bio:

    http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/e...h-autobio.html

Lots of Ne followed by Ti. Yes, I think he's ILE.

As for his disease, given its political undertones (his words, according to a NOVA interview), I would suspect -Te was breaking in on his ego.... (or I would hope such? It would be interesting to see a socionics-based profile of his life and work.)

I later spent times of the order of five to eight months in hospitals in New Jersey, always on an involuntary basis and always attempting a legal argument for release.
Yeah that sounds like NiTe id.

    Why ILE?

He was/is exceedingly reclusive and schizoid. Would such be typical of an ILE?

    @imfd:
Yes, but you've got to remember: he didn't like what he had gone through. Which means, he would have used the id to approach it. (nevermind that it was a long span of time, which ENTps somewhat dislike having forced on them because they want to use it to fulfill their potential instead.) Although the span of time he spent in there was limited, when he was in there it was indefinite, conditional upon his improvement. Faced with this threatening span of time, he needed new relationships -- new contacts -- by which to bring that span to its fulfillment.

if his personality is anything like it was portrayed in the movie, he is not extroverted in the least bit. those pics strike me as ILI, but a few had a subtle LII feel to them. If I'm not mistaken, didn't he contribute to some field of economics with his mathematical theories? If so, this could suggest NiTe.

The character in the movie seemed clearly ILI to me. I understand that if you analyze it via +/- or other experimental typing theories, you could come up with something very different. But with standard typing methods, his emphasis on fluid and changing imagination seems clearly .

The photos of Nash suggest ILI as the most likely type. His autobiography in the link given by tcaudilllg gives an ILI impression rather than something written by an ILE. The video from one of his lectures also gives a strong ILI > ILE impression -- his flatness with a total lack of emotional expressions, his rather monotone voice, his use of the expression "The basic idea is ...".

What article are you talking about, tcaudilllg? What is it that you are trying to translate?

My primary rationale is that I can understand what the hell he's writing. Understanding ILI prose tends to be difficult for me. He seems alpha for that reason.

    @Phaedrus:
I'm using the autobiography of course.

At least one of those photos reminded me of Augusta; most of them reminded me of Dennis Kucinich.

Nobel prize speeches are excellent typing evidence, btw.

    From the very first paragraph:

(And, also, one suspects, psychologically, that the earliest memories have become "memories of memories" and are comparable to traditional folk tales passed on by tellers and listeners from generation to generation.) But facts are available when direct memory fails for many circumstances.
What information elements are being used here?

Ni and Te, but a lot of Ne and Ti, too. He's analyzing effect the two pairs have on each other somehow.

    Default John Nash

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Forbes_Nash

I don't know if you've read the book "A Beautiful Mind", but it is not quite like the movie. Basically, John Nash is a genius -a highly arrogant and eccentric one. I know that he's definitely an NT (researcher) of some sort, but I'm not sure which one exactly. Here are my arguments for each:

INTj: For: Highly logical. He wished to be like a group of space aliens he read about in science fiction that were 100% rational.

Against: His arrogant behaviour seems to go against POLR Se.

INTp or ENTp: For: He seems to be POLR Fi or Fe. His thought process was more intuitive and nonlinear than logical and step-by-step.

Against: Again, his desire to be completely rational points away from anything but being a dominant logical type.

ENTj: I'm not going to make any arguments for this type, as I think it's unlikely; John Nash is hardly a practical person.

What type do you think he is?

That is an argument against INTj and for INTp.

Maybe. But every NT is somewhat arrogant in the eyes of other types.

That's an argument against ENTj anyway.

No, definitely not. It is a rather strong argument for INTp.

It is obvious that people are mislead by the socionic INTj descriptions and the descriptions of the function. is not about wanting to be rational and logical above everything else, even though the descriptions of might cause people to get that incorrect idea. Jung has described (Ti) much better than any socionist has ever done as far as I know. The bad descriptions continue to be a major cause of mistypings, that's a fact.

Correct. ENTj is out of the question for Nash.

His most likely type based on what I have seen and read about him is INTp. He is clearly not an ENTj, and he does not look like an INTj. He does not look particularly like an ENTp either, so INTp seems to be the best fit.

But that is not a good argument for INTj, because it is not very common that INTjs have that as a strong tendency.

I took a look more recently and I thought probably ILI. He was known for being extremely competitive and status-conscious. He would pick out the hardest problems just to prove how smart he was.
