    Default Online Persona

I was talking to my ENTp friend today. I mentioned one time that I could have him come here and tell you guys why I can't be ENTp. He thought this was hilarious, but also said something I didn't expect: he acts more reserved online than IRL. (Though it should be mentioned that he has limited experience posting in forums.)

We figured the reason for this is that he is used to, and appreciates, the spontaneity of RL conversations. This is his natural environment for being witty and extroverted. I, on the other hand, like the time to plan out what I'm going to say online, and thus when online act more witty and extroverted than normal.

How does your personality (not) change online vs. IRL?

Since my own typing has been called into question based on my online behavior, I have to constantly remind myself that other posters may not be quite what they seem either.

It doesn't change at all on IMs, chats etc.

I think on forums I appear more aggressive than I really am.

i'm apparently more aggressive-seeming IRL. when i ask friends & family & those who know me IRL to pick among socionics descriptions, for instance, they think i am like, ENTj or ISTp. here, a lot people seem to see me as softer and F-ish, like a calm dominant type. i guess i am masking something, presenting something online that i don't IRL, or not presenting myself accurately?

That's funny, I would think that aggression and outgoingness are the two major changes online. I find it easier to be both here.

Maybe it's Super-ego indulgence in general.

doesn't that smilingeyes dichotomic descriptions thread say that INXjs may prefer written communication to spoken? maybe that accounts for some of the difference.

re: aggression & outgoingness--no way! easier to be aggressive if you don't have to face up to it later! (; a friend of mine in high school always liked to write me notes but she'd often leave out the important stuff, saying that "paper can't keep secrets." it was good advice, IMO. the same applies here, i think. so maybe i'm a little more cautious on forums.

    Less pompous.

I think some of my posts can come across that way sometimes.

Also, I think I actually talk a lot more in person/on the phone.

I'm more reserved and matter-of-fact irl. It's much more difficult for me to start conversations with people I am not already close to, and at work I'm just pretty much just quiet and professional, perhaps too much so. Around those I am close to, I am a lot more talkative and, as Peter put it, high strung (hence my last avatar), a definite "type A" personality. I guess I'm kind and caring with those I'm close to, but awkward and distant from those I'm not, and I don't respond positively to people who try to be "familiar" with me, touch me, or compliment me. I've been told that I'm intimidating, but I've also been told I'm very strange. (I guess it's just because I do weird shit to amuse myself when I'm bored.) People who know my family say that my whole family is weird, but really awesome at the same time. We're odd, eccentric, and perhaps even insane... but we're real, and we treat others fairly. There's probably about a dozen people who have said something to that effect. I guess that regardless of the naive mistakes my parents made (in spite of their good intentions), we were raised earnestly and without pretense.

It depends on who you are and where we are.

Essentially I am the same. There are differences and fluctuations that paint a very general picture: there are many difference aspects of reality that I focus on from time to time. IRL I probably would not talk to you unless it was work related or socionics related... so less "anything goes" kind of interaction.

If you're in this forum to learn something, be careful. Lots of misplaced toxicity.

IME many people are much more expressive and aggressive online. Almost like overcompensating, or thinking that it doesn't matter as much as it would in person. It is something to watch for.

My motivation for being more aggressive: simply put, I don't hang around people that make me aggressive IRL, we avoid each other. However, this isn't an available and plausible option on a internet forum, and thus I tend to be prone to get angrier.

I always said I am not an aggressive person, and there I gave the motivation as to why on the internet I come across as more aggressive.
