Belgium is the most boring country in Europe I know.

If you can go to Germany, Sweden or Denmark, I'd suggest Germany. In Sweden and Denmark pretty much everybody speaks fluent English, so if you'd like to learn a foreign language, in Germany it would be better - - besides German being more useful then either Danish or Swedish.

If you mean exciting in a big-city way, I'd say Berlin, followed by Hamburg.

You can find lots of good beer anywhere in Germany!

Munich is an exciting city, but you might find the rest of Bavaria too conservative/provincial/boring.

Hamburg is a beautiful green city with lots of water, more bridges than Venice and a fabulous party district (which happens to be the red light district, so you might want to wait a few years). Berlin is not as beautiful, but it has more of an edge and is very exciting! It's a great, fascinating city and unlike any other I have seen.

Personally, I think Munich is boring and pretentious, but I might be biased. Cologne is cool, too. Don't bother with Frankfurt. Freiburg is very nice and fun.

And as Expat says, there is plenty of beer everywhere, don't you worry! Jever is my favorite.

I was an exchange student over here in the US when I was 16 (for a year). I do recommend doing it, but I went through some hellish times as well...and my mom told me a just recently that she wouldn't allow it again.

You have a few more years to convince her, don't you? Y

I am from Europe, but I live in the States now. My exchange year was truly life-changing in that respect, so beware!

I had major problems with my first host family and it was not pretty. I insisted on the organization finding me a different one and eventually they did. I got very, very lucky, but the first 4 weeks very really hard (+ the culture shock). With your personality, you could probably push through the rough times (and there might not be any!). It was an amazing experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. But wait until you are 17 or 18 or so. I think it's better to wait.

I would recommend to go to a city, but you might not have a choice.
Let me know if you have specific questions!

I also like Cologne very much, but it's on a different scale from Berlin or Hamburg; Freiburg is even smaller. I agree about Frankfurt.

    What was different?
    Oh boy, where to start...

Well, the dynamics in American schools are very different, fo example and I was always glad that I was an outsider anyway (being an exchange student), so people really didn't give me a hard time for being an anarcho-communist (yes, I was one, too) except for those who wouldn't talk to me because my best friend was openly gay. I would say the hardest part was to adjust to American small-town life after having lived in a big European city. People were very friendly, but, to me, exceptionally conservative and religious.

I missed the liberal feel of my home, but I loved the friendliness and openness of people. I was lucky to meet people who shared my liberal values and who could help me adjust and not piss people off left and right. My host family was (is) also very conservative, but very open-minded and accepting. I learned that my values don't make me a better person. But I also learned that being an outsider (I was not popular at my home school, but I wasn't really an oddball either. In an American high school as a regular student, I would have been a freak) can be a huge challenge and I admire anyone who goes through high school as "the weird kid."

Ok, that didn't really answer your question. People were different in good and other ways. Hm...is there anything in particular you had in mind with your question?

Germany is a very nice place. It's flat, but after a few months in Ohio, that doesn't bother me. It has lots of interesting places and historical sites (Although the last ones might not be counted as that positive by an ESTp  ), it has very good food (Also very unhealthy, but..). One thing any American in Europe should be prepared for: The food is much less sweet, and less overall. We don't eat as much. To give you something more concrete: In Norway, I'm considered a big eater. In the US, people worry that I eat too little.

I really hope you do get to go to Germany! You could come back speaking all sorts of exotic gutteral utterances, and bring back some stollen or marzipan or some other goodies.

Haha, yeah I hope I do. Oh, and I'm a really picky eater, so would I be able to get my hands on plain vegetables and fruit? I could live off of that if push comes to shove.
You will get your hands on them much easier there than here, don't you worry. Germans eat more healthy than Americans (far less fast food and more from scratch). You'll be fine, I'm sure.

The problem: My family and I went out to dinner tonight, and my ESI mom said to me, "You should think of an alternative besides this exchange thing." I said, "Like what?" and she goes, "maybe you could take a trip there for three weeks." WHAT THE FUCK, MATE?!!??!?!?!?!?!? It's like she's pulling all of my future oppertunities right out from under my feet and slamming the doors on what would be the best year of my life. I'm practically in tears now because I want to go so badly.
Well, when do you want to go? Perhaps your mom just feels that you are a bit young and wants you to wait?

OMG, I swear I had that exact conversation with my mom when I wanted to study abroad! Eventually, I was persistant enough, and my sophomore year, they packed me up and sent me away to Italy. My was a summer, trip, though <- not during the school year, but it was definately one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. Learning the language, meeting kids your age from a very different culture, and exploring the history, art, and food <- you'll also pick up on a whole bunch of foreign "quirks" like, in Italy, it's considered rude to say "Thank you" after recieving a completent.

If you want some ammunition, here's a nice little article:
    http://www.transitionsabroad.com/pub...y_abroad.shtml

Also, you might want to consider a study abroad program from out of your school system. Possibly find one during the summer, too:
    http://highschool.studyabroad.com/

I got a perfect score on my verbal SATs, and during the test, I was using Italian to help figure out what long words meant! It might help you too, because English has German roots!

    Highjack!

    I will seek and find you . . .

I shall take you to bed and have my way with you .

I will make you ache, shake & sweat until you moan & groan.

I will make you beg for mercy, beg for me to stop.

I will exhaust you to the point that you will be relieved when I'm finished with you.

And, when I am finished, you will be weak for days.

I do that too! Sometimes, I even write poetry just to gross people out. It's fun!

A man with a cat in Nantucket,
Decided one day he would fuck it,

    The dick was too tall,
And now he's content just to suck it.
