Massive Attack. Lots of good songs but most of them have the same formula. I think they are alpha/beta.

there are 3 levels of sword mastery :
1.: ability to win with sword in your hand.
2.: ability to win without sword in your hand, but in your soul.
3, and the hightest one: without having sword nor in hand not in soul be able to win and bring peace to people.

For sure. Although the video is rather random; it's not exactly what comes to mind when I hear the song.

Apparently when they were developing the song (when it still had no name) they thought it sounded a bit like a Ennio Morricone tune (you know, they guy who did the music for the Dollars trilogy. So, then they decided to get some big fuck off guitars, turn up the amp and put in lots of feedback shit, and make it cowboy beyond belief. Rather than have the sound of a single 'man with no name', they made it sound like the four horsemen of the apocalypse riding across the Earth to do righteous vengeance. The lyrics of the song appear to be from the perspective of one of the four horseman - 'come ride with me, through the veins of history' etc.

Of course, they couldn't call it anything ordinary like 'The Cowboy Song', so they called it the Knights of Cydonia - referring to the area of Mars that looks like a face, apparently, but only if you look at it a spectacularly odd angle. So its a song for cowboys in the 21st century .

Ah yes. Perhaps "random" was not the best choice of word. It's just silly.

So I was kind of pissed that Alpha Music thread had like more than double our posts. The one thing I notice about Beta music that distinguishes it from other "Quadra music" types is the sheer passion behind it.

Here I go with my selection of "Beta" music

    Modest Mouse - Dramamine

This band is very Beta, imo. Brock is a clear cut INFp, but a very disturbed one at that. =] I like. In their music, you can hear the undertones of seeking, I really believe that. It gets really rough, dirty and forceful. The is all over the place in the lyrics and just the entire emotional expression sometimes goes overboard, conducive to This song in particular is kind of like the downside of Beta.. hopeless sounding. Hit the bottom.

    The Arcade Fire - Rebellion

Holy crap, doesn't get more Beta than this. This makes me sort of teary, tbh with the whole collective group atmosphere. It is just so profoundly and collective in group atmosphere. It's beautiful. But yeah, this band has very Beta lyrics and sound because it sounds really desperate, wanting to impose change through expression of and Just listen to it! And watch their passion. Plus, Bowie <3 this band

    Blur - Sweet Song

A softer side of Beta. This song is fucking gorgeous, one of my all time favs. Just feel the in it. It's very flowing sounding, languid.. very sad =[ *sigh* This is synced up to a different Blur video, but it works just as well since it doesn't have it's own video.

Coheed & Cambria - The Crowing

The GRR side of Beta! Lolz, I had an obsession with this band a few years back. I'm still unashamed to admit I think they're amazing. They have a great concept behind the music they do - a futuristic comic thing. Yes, this is probably mixed in with Alpha values but it still has a Beta feel. Isn't it such a sick song? I chose an AMV someone made of it with Final Fantasy clips. It's so dramatic, I love it.

and of course... the grand finale ...

Try and find a video of a live concert of The Who (Alpha Band) and then come back and talk about passion.

Rap. Southern Rap in particular emphasizes living the "high life," like Crime Mob, and also going from nothing to the top, like T.I.; lots of focus on status. Some West Coast rap is more Gamma with a focus mostly on Se, but Fi is obvious in some like Snoop Dogg: having lots of money, not caring about anyone but close friends. Midwestern rap leans Alpha sometimes, mostly because it's very Fe: most have a heavy focus on lyrics and emotional impact, like Eminem or Atmosphere. East Coast rap varies a lot, but overall I'd say Beta with some Alpha: you have the guys like Notorious BIG who are all about going from nothing to something, but then there are guys like Fat Joe who preach about unity in the rap world (like that'll ever happen...).

In any case, they're all rooted in Beta, IMO.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...

I think this video shows an over the top, exaggerated "tragical realism" that sometimes shows up in Beta art/music... Actually, thinking about it, this is almost like an exposé of negative caricatures of the Beta quadra. Anyways I really like it.

Actually Starfall, that guys seems a little TOO spastic and hyper to be SLE? I dunno, I don't have the best picture of SLEs in my mind.. most of them I know are actually a lot more subdued and wouldn't act that way on stage...

OK... I have read this thread and will presently re-read it, but before I do, I must ask (what is to me) the obvious question. How can music be related/relegated to a Quadra? Are all these four types more liable to agree on music than they would with individuals of other quadras? I don't know how this is really accurate.

For example: say I encountered the roughest, raunchiest ESTp. Chances are he's just NOT going to want to borrow my Tori Amos cd. And I'm certainly not going to suddenly start liking rap or speed metal. I like sonorous music, emotional, occasionally strident, but not yelling or screaming. And not thunderous nor offensive lyrics. I want music to touch me deeply -- envelop me and (often) move me to tears or fill me with sheer joy.

Specifically, I find I'm drawn to music that resonates with me in both lyrics (meaning) and melody (tone).

I guess I see music as being more related to other type-related factors. INFp music vs. INFj music (some overlap, definitely), etc. Or just preference altogether, without yielding enough information about type to make inferences. Quadra level dynamics for music, movies and the like, just seem a bit contrived. Just IMO.

I'd appreciate it if someone could offer some reasons in typology terms why quadras might share taste in these forms of entertainment...?
