He tries to cultivate some retarded media image of authenticity by being rude to everyone. It usually comes across as sad because he's senile and frail but there's no reason for him to treat military people any differently. The cult of the military and state you rightwing lunatics devote yourselves to is somewhat terrifying in its idiocy and fanaticism.

it seems like ESE antics. i've noticed some male ESEs especially do this thing where they soft attack you if you don't react with the Fe they want back. they may act wounded and hurt so you would feel bad for holding your emotional ground against them, and because it's this soft attack with affection an aggressive reaction back would also leave them with the upper hand. it's to channel you into reacting the way they want. i find the best tactic is often to ignore them entirely when this happens if i don't want to end up in the game, bc otherwise some of them might carry on soft attacking and try to draw others into it as well, which is even more terrible.
pearl-clutching about things (whether military/patriotic values or anything else) oft = drama queening.
