    Default Europe (not EU)

Dispelling a Myth ? The Fathers of Europe and the Construction of a Euro-Identity
    European Law Journal - Vol 12, Issue 5, 661-679.
    Isabelle Petit

    Abstract :

There is a broad agreement on the fact that today there is a wide gap between the European Union (EU) and the citizens of the Member States. According to a common belief, this gap is the result of a deliberate decision made by the founding fathers and subsequent European officials to keep the integration dynamic distant from the people. Yet, if we look closely at their writings and actions that were initiated by the European Commission at an early stage in the integration process, we can only conclude that there is little evidence to support this common belief. On the contrary, it appears that the founding fathers were eager to inform the public on issues related to the communities and that they did not hesitate to support measures aimed at enhancing knowledge about Europe, its policies, and its institutions. It is essential to question these beliefs in order to improve our understanding of the democratic deficit in the EU and especially of the solutions proposed for remedying it. If we admit that the founding fathers never had the intention of keeping the people in ignorance and that some actions were rapidly taken to bring the EU closer to them then it becomes difficult to claim that a reduction of the democratic deficit will follow when decision-makers simply imagine and adopt programmes aimed at bridging the gap. The question then becomes why have this socialisation and this ’rapprochement’ not occurred

Funny, I was just thinking about this the other day, about just how Europe seems to be right now. Well, the European union that is.
There is a diffenrence between the European Union (set up by the United States following occupation) and the "aboriginal" culture.
There is more then one "aboriginal" european culture. And the EU is a mixture of the western and nordic european cultures.
Definitely I agree with everything you say, but to type a country or a culture is a leap of the imagination in itself. No country has really a type. Only people do. So to say what type is Europe, is a generalization.

Europe can have a type, and still each country can have its' own type. By type I think we mean atmosphere really, in the context of countries.

The way I see it is that just like people in groups settings countries adapt, subdue their real temperament in order to fit in, so a type is what that group is trying to converge to.
Usually this is a mixture of the most dominant influence with the secondary, but in the end it's a mixture of all the influences that make it up.

In the case of Europe, not the EU, there are several distinct cultural influences that can be described through the temperaments, the Nordic and East European would be I**p, the Central European would be I**j, the West European would be E**j and the Mediterranean would be E**p.

    IMO that is.

That seems to be accurate, though obviously there will be some exceptions - I can't see Ireland being Exxj for example .

No, but I can see the and the more than ISTj, which I considered briefly. He looks more ISTp than ISTj - e.g. the look in his cheeks as if he is chewing gum (not rigid, like with a ISTj).
