It would seem to follow from the theory that it should be quite fundamental in socionics, yet in practise it does seem to be of very limited use in typing. What am I missing?

Well, what I notice is that people measure their life by the conscious functions that they have. Also they are innovative with their conscious functions, not subconscious ones. Guderian is credited with inventing Blitzkrieg. For that you need to want to invent something to do with dynamics, with change, it seems a very Te thing to do.
