I have typed him as ISTj. ISTp could apply, but less.

It's possible ISTj. Its just hard to find a photo of him not wincing or distorting his face while playing the guitar. I looked on google and I found like 3 or 4 pictures where he's making a regular relaxed face as opposed to the other hundred

Post links to them if you can.
I have some impressions from his music and guitar playing. I'd assume Beta or Gamma quadra. Just based on song themes, I'd guess the group was dominated by Gamma quadra (not "serious" or "earnest" enough for Beta). Those are just first impressions.

I would've pasted some of them but I think the links were dead, so you can only see a small cached version of them when you google image search his name.

    ISTp, I think.

This would make David Lee Roth, (ESFp,) his Illusionary.

I myself see ENTp. Maybe I'm factoring in his guitar playing too much, he's persistently taken a visionary approach and loves to throw convention out the window. His playing isn't the most technically precise despite his obvious ability to sharpen it up, yet he brought new techniques to the forefront in the eighties, and that's not to mention his entirely random choices for equipment, all of which rule out ISTp in my opinion.

Actually, it's you opinion that is completely rude.

BTW, my opinion is Van Halen= nothing special, but that's kinda irrelevant.

NCassidy--you definitely factor in his guitar-playing more than I do when typing him.
For me, these traits seem to exemplify ISTp:
    - he works for hours and years alone in his own studio, (behind his house, I believe very rarely seeks publicity; very rarely goes out at all, and remains publicly silent for years at a time, (through divorce, cancer, changes of lead singer, etc.)
    - seems to enjoy sensual pleasures, (i.e. prodigous alcohol consumption very confident in the worth of his musical contibutions, and the validity of his opinion.
-highly abtract thinking, evident in his guitar playing; more interested in discussing guitar technique than anything related to people.
    ISTj is another good option.

science as magic-- Wow! Tell us about it.

He reminds me of my ESE brother-in-law. Similar poses, build, and facial expressions.
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Under cerulean skies...
