Default What does fashion mean to you?

    https://youtu.be/UcvKdNiA7uc

After watching this video of the style analysis of the characters of mean girls, my view on fashion and the meaning of fashion changed for me completely. I always picked out clothes that I liked and that I was comfortable with, but I never thought of the meaning it would be giving and how my style could be telling a story. After watching some more style analysis, I have gone through my closet and have purged as much as I can to start my personal style journey and what it means to me and what image I want to give.

So, what does fashion me to you?

I always loved the applied arts. These days I'm into couture and costumery.

I love the idea of slowly curating a wardrobe, picking up pieces from here and there, ones you really love that mean a lot to you.

There's also... something to fashion shows you can't get from, say, watching a film, going to a gallery. Dance comes close but only if the costumes are pretty

Personally, to me, clothes are something that comes between my body and the external world, like work gloves. They keep my skin from being abraded. This is why my SLI-Te son tells me I have a tendency to dress like a homeless person.

But I'm aware of fashion! I just can't do it well myself.

Just after I got married to an SLI-Te, she and I went suit-shopping and I found one that made me look like a panther. Sleek and powerful, which suited my Se-HA. It was fairly expensive, but when a suit does that for you, who cares what it costs?

Since I discovered tailored clothes, I generally try to find someone who looks like they dress tastefully (I can see it, I just can't do it) and I let them choose my clothes, with me having veto power. When I dress to impress, I like clothes that look clean, rich, practical, and slightly out of the ordinary (maybe this is a touch of Ni rather than Si). Nothing too ostentatious, nothing worn out. Just excellent quality.

When I dress for myself, I definitely dress like a homeless person.

This might change, though. I recently had an ESI-Se go through my closets and I now seem to have about half the clothes I did before she passed judgement on them. I'm not sure what clothes she threw out, but I'm sure she thought they weren't flattering.

Except for uniforms and more formal dress, what I wear is a usually solid-color T-shirt and jeans, or shorts. I don’t know when the last time I thought about wearing anything else was, and I have no desire to change how I dress. It’s comfortable and looks fine; that’s good enough for me.

I don’t like anything with branding. If I’m going to be a walking advertisement the company needs to pay me. I’m certainly not going to spend money to advertise something. And I don’t want to wear anything uncomfortable or that draws much attention. So this simple “outfit” suits my needs, and I don’t have any reason to change it.

    Fashion, not much.
I like certain colors, certain fabrics, certain cuts that I think are a good choices for me, but are they fashionable? Probably not. I keep my stuff until I either don't like it or until it is unwearable. Mostly the second option.
I generaly try to look boring, I have my boring jackets I'll throw on top of something not-so-boring.
I like scarves and accessories, and since I walk a lot, durable and comfortable shoes.
The aspect I put the least thoughts into is shoes, I go through them fast and replacing them is tough because I'm looking for a good deal, something I like, something durable, something comfy, something that is mostly neutral or fits with most of the rest, certain materials...
I sometimes make or customize accessories 'cause I can.
I'd say I mostly wear casual stuff, with a dash of chic, edgy, or cute. And butterfly prints. I love butterfly stuff.

The thing I hate about clothes and appearances is other people's opinions, whether positive or negative, I've been late because too many people wanted to tell me how gorgeous my dress was. Should have been 15 minutes early.

Whatever fits and fits the temperature outside. Like in the summer I like to wear natural materials like linen, cotton and Ramie. In the winter I love soft things like cashmere and whatever feels soft to the skin. I don't care about logos or brand names. I buy 90% of my clothes from thrift shops and second hand stores and I know how to repair damages as well as repurpose items. So I don't care about spending money for the "look". I am kind of feminine in style so I do tend to wear more skirts and dresses.

The result is that sometimes I can be overly impersonal or self-centered in my approach, not being understanding of others in the process and simply thinking "you should do this" or "everyone should follor this rule"..."regardless of how they feel or where they're coming from"which just isn't a good attitude to have. It is a way, though, to give oneself an artificial sense of self-justification. LSE

Hmm...fashion for me is kind of a way to express how I feel. My mood does affect the type of clothing I'll wear.
I don't wear weird, wacky, colorful clothes ever because I don't think they look good on me. I wear things that I look attractive in, comfort is also needed. However, I don't dress for weather sometimes, my outfit looking good takes precedence over most things, lol (I feel like this sounds so shallow).

When I was younger I never really had the freedom to dress in things I thought were attractive, and now I do. I also don't feel like a curate my look but I just naturally gravitate to certain items. However, my outfits are always well thought out, no matter how simple they look (does that mean I do curate my look? idk).

I used to think it was wrong for me to dress that way, to just be attractive, as if I'm not dressing for me but for others. However, I feel good whenever I think I look attractive, so it is really benefitting me anyways. I also don't like brand names on my clothes.

I'm rambling so let me just sum this up.

Fashion is a way for me to express how attractive I feel on any given day.

I like wearing cool stuff but it kind of feels like a waste of money and time as a guy since being conventionally attractive and having a good body seems to go a much longer way. I wish I were the kind of guy who could look good in basketball shorts, slides and a tank top

Fashion is looking good, really 'wow'ing people by looking narcissistically hot and attractive. With fashion you don't wanna be too match-y matchy. Also 'you thought about the function but you forgot about the fashion' is another thing- often times people do have to trade fashion for comfort/practicality a bit because that's just how it naturally goes.

I don't care much what people wear - but what bothers me the most is when heavier women wear really tight clothing designed for women that are more petite, or who have the body that can pull it off. 'in stereotypical sassy gay man voice' "Oh honey, don't do that! That's just... no!" Try to wear something form fitting at least- the problem with a lot of 'fashionable' items is they look out of place in the real practical world unless you are on the runway or in a gay man's campy superhero fantasy story. So I would say depending on the environment, you wanna look more 'form-fitting' than fashionable but this can sometimes have a lot of personal leeway. Don't be stupid and wear a cool looking ring or a hot looking shirt to a place where it would easily get stolen though, or if you are the only one wearing that and everybody else doesn't it looks out of place as well to me.

I know a guy that dresses like a '80s/90s grunge gay porn star - and it would look AMAZING if he had the body to pull it off- sadly, he does not- so it looks like the most corniest thing ever. If you wanna do the 80s gay porn thing and wear a half-flannel shirt and ripped jeans at the knees -- then make sure you work out a lot and have the proper chest to pull it off, otherwise it's not going to look right at all. He instead would look much better and hotter in like a button down 70s shiny shirt thing that covered up more skin. Men like Adam Killian & Jesse Santana can pull off the gay porn half-flannel look because they have the right chest for it- this person did not. He wasn't too obese by any means- but you just have to really be buff to pull off a look like that. Or possibly very thin/twink-ish. His average body type was the worst kind of body for that outfit!!

It's very important to also remember the environment- do I really need to look like a hot porn star when I'm going to Target to pick up some milk? Definitely not. Do I want to look that way for a private date with my boyfriend? HELL YEA BRUH!!

"People should like us for who we on the inside" is a nice sentiment- but is also just too naive and stupid- might as well be attractive and appealing some of the time to lure your loved ones in and give them some eye candy, because deliberately looking bad isn't being very nice or moral either. Most 'normal' people go to church and be nice people and talk about the importance of judging somebody's 'soul' rather than their soles- but in private they order something from Victoria's Secret or whatever so their husband has something really nice and sexy to look at or whatever.

Fashion is that superficial. It's just for you to look nice and feel good about yourself, stand out etc. In a way I can see how that can be "healing" for others (whatever the fuck that means) but at its root I think fashion is just materialism and besides in the past it's basically how we differentiate the rich from the poor. It's like a status symbol. Actually even right now it is. Like imagine all the waste of one fashion show showcasing weird and expensive dresses. It doesn't make sense. It's extravagance because you have the means to. I'm probably reaching here since fashion as it is just clothes and showing them off but when you reach the inner circle you'll see ultra materialism and keeping up a facade. And fashion is tied to money like sure we supposedly shouldn't care about brands etc. but that's just what we think because we are not in the center of fashion. Fashion -> money, luxury and waste which a lot of people cannot afford. If you want to be in the center of fashion you have to cater to the elite. Do you think that an average person would buy a gown over food?

Actually even if you say normal people can make the most out of their wardrobe and be fashionable, well you are probably an average/middle-class person by saying that. Imagine being so poor you cannot afford food for your family. It's the same thing with a lot of things in the world, even knowledge is already tied to the material at this point. Internet made things really happen but it always seems like demons lurk in every circle. And great people die too. Fashion as it is now is just one big blob that really drills the point that some people cannot rise up even if they are supposed to because evil materialism always wins. Now I'm not saying that you should not try to be fashionable. I said in the first part that I even like nice clothes. But every time I have the ability to say I would like to buy nice clothes and even think of fashion I have accepted the fact that it will always be dirty because it is tied to evil and I have the privilege above some people. And I know that I don't deserve the privilege. It is dirty that instead of creating something that would actually last and would benefit everyone I would rather spend the time to care about looking good. And the worst, it's only for myself. But sure I am only human and we should make peace with ourselves.

Now given everything that I've said it's easy to see that fashion hold so much power. And that's exactly why we have to pay attention to it because instead of dwindling to sadness due to the fact that there are a lot of evils in the world, we can instead focus on the fact that fashion is a net that binds those evils. Thus they are easier to find and rule over. If you have the ability to make the most out of fashion you can use it as a front of power in order to get closer to the evil people and use them for your agenda. It's basically equipping yourself for the battle, or a mask to deceive the enemy. And okay some people might think there is no fucking war, but there is. People who look better will get the attention and will be listened to more than the others. If you don't play the part, you'll be ignored. While it is good to be a no one for some people, but it is a catastrophe for people who actually has something to say. And most important thing here is the fact that it's not just the evil people who would ignore you. Everyone would, even the people you are trying to empower. It's because many people have already relinquished their own power and have already accepted the fact that fashion and other people rule over them. You cannot really empower them at this point because what I've realized is only the person can take back his/her own power over the enemy, but if you look presentable these people might look up to you as a spectacle - hopefully with something to say. Who are the fashionable ones? Mostly stars. And that's exactly what a star really is. You should be one of the brightest amidst the dark sky. Something innately unattainable but gives hope to people. And trust me, a lot of people can be stars specially if you have the money (because after all just dress up be pretty and you can do everything) but it takes something to be a real star. And these stars don't even know that their time to shine is limited, and there are other fucking stars around. What makes your shine worthy to be noticed? And I'm not saying worthy based on others perception but based on the highest good, because after all you can just wear any crazy thing and people would look for sure.

We kinda have to accept at this point that good and evil will always be here and they just have to work together well. Hopefully the people who can actually use the power from fashion actually has the best interests at heart and when they reach the center of fashion they won't lose themselves in it. And if you would choose to be a spectacle better use that limited time to really do something important.

Edit: I also forgot and it just dawned on me that the "healing" from clothing is tied to power too, it's gaining power over yourself instead of other people so I take back what I said on that part lol and admit that's a valid point. So it could be that if you are one of the beaten you can heal yourself first and then rise above.
That fashion only makes people listen to You or respect You when You go by their statue of how You should look is extremely negative and defeating, I agree. It's pointless, a scam, a big joke and hoax. The way You look on the surface never reveals the true dream catcher and wish maker You are at Your core.

I treat my fashion like cosplaying. I sort of think of it as though I'm always cosplaying every day and I put things together based on what aspect of my character I feel like emphasizing. It varies quite a lot, but it's always something unique, at least when I'm not working anyways. At work I have to wear pretty conservative office clothing. In the winter I like to wear an entirely black suit (or black with a very dark green or purple shirt), but for Japan though that's pretty bold, so I try to not do that too often and wear more "normal" colours the rest of the time. I guess some people associate that sort of thing with the Yakuza. It's frustrating though. I don't really like suits, but I've totally thought about getting a really nice purple one tailored. I love the way Rui's mob boss suit in BEASTARS looks. The pants and jacket are wine purple, the button-up shirt is a dark pine green, and he's got a black tie. It's glorious

I've always worn what I wanted to wear regardless of the times. When I was in high school the prom queen yelled at me for dissing the backstreet boys. I ignored her. I wore leather pants and tight concert tees.

LATER that year the prom queen was wearing leather pants and sexy shirts. Her cronies followed.

I've never been big into fashion but I do enjoy wearing jewelry that appropriates other cultures. For instance, I am wearing santeria beads signifying Eleggua because he's cool and likes the same stuff I like like rum, cigars, coffee, and shiny things and because I like red and black beads. I also wear mala beads though I occasionally actually use them for meditation.

Fashion is awesome y'all are just a bunch of ugly and white trash breeders!!!

    j/k

I do wish they would sell better looking shirts in bigger sizes in stores. Or make more of them somehow if it's a thing where they are selling out too quickly. Often times the size I need is also some hideous purple color that makes Tinky Winky look hot. I swear it's designed by these bitchy catty gay men who can go 'Oh look it's Tinky Winky' then laugh with their spoiled urbanite friends if I actually was stupid enough to buy it.

This was more true when I was heavier though. Now that I lost some weight it's not as bad- but I still encounter it. Please stop making every color that looks good only for small-ass men who wear medium. Kthx.

No matter how pretentious this might seem to anyone, fashion is a vital part of my individualized toolbox for self-expression.
It's not necessarily something that fluctuates based on my mood or environmental circumstance as much as it is simply used as means to an end revolving around my paramount and incessant search for ways to indirectly express and/or embody a certain type of resonance and something that points to my intimate identity and values.

It's surprisingly hard to put into words, but that's exactly the idea of it. One's ability to show something by rooting it in the concrete, without having to attempt to express it through language. The ways in which i go on about it are as unassailable to me as my eye color, mostly due to the fact that it's deeply and personally connected to my sense of self.

Someone might look at an outfit or a piece of clothing and feel or think nothing of it. And that's more than alright as far as i'm concerned, but it simply isn't how i operate. My clothing style and aesthetic sensibilities in general are very congruent with my identity.

This was an interesting thread. I'm not very consistent with my fashion. I have a good fashion sense, but I don't always care about how I look. It's definitely tied to my mood.

The better I look the better I feel though. So fashion can be therapeutic in a way lol.

I think of fashion as a way to beautify yourself as well as express yourself with your unique flair.
The Barnum or Forer effect is the tendency for people to judge that general, universally valid statements about personality are actually specific descriptions of their own personalities. A "universally valid" statement is one that is true of everyone—or, more likely, nearly everyone. It is not known why people tend to make such misjudgments, but the effect has been experimentally reproduced.

The psychologist Paul Meehl named this fallacy "the P.T. Barnum effect" because Barnum built his circus and dime museum on the principle of having something for everyone. It is also called "the Forer effect" after its discoverer, the psychologist Bertram R. Forer, who modestly dubbed it "the fallacy of personal validation".
