I always close it before flushing for hygienic reasons
The decisive thing is not the reality of the object, but the reality of the subjective factor, i.e. the primordial images, which in their totality represent a psychic mirror-world. It is a mirror, however, with the peculiar capacity of representing the present contents of consciousness not in their known and customary form but in a certain sense sub specie aeternitatis, somewhat as a million-year old consciousness might see them.

When I first lived alone or with guys, the toilet seat stayed up. When I got married, the wife had a few surprises in the middle of the night when she went to sit down on a toilet that she always kept the seat down and the lid up. She pointed this out to me a couple times and I started keeping the seat down but the lid up.

I’ve since stayed in homes where there was a dog and the dog would drink from the toilet if the lid was up. I’ve also gotten an iPhone and I’ve heard that a big failure point is dropping the phone into the toilet, so now, I keep both the seat and the lid down.

I don’t really think about it. There are so many people living in this house I’ve just kind of accepted that things are going to be crazy. There’s a cabinet over our toilet and I’ve dropped a ton of stuff in it by accident, getting things out, which is my biggest concern about it. But I always leave the bathroom door shut because of toddler. Everyone knows not to leave the bathroom door open ever.

Lol this is so strange and odd that the poise of such a non-important and meaningless instrument should be the area of main focus and introspection.

Default all good, top lid preferred up

top lid up makes it easier for cats to drink from toilet if preferred -- toilet bowl is cleaner than avg cell phone

bottom lid up makes it easier for me to pee -- some ppl sit blind on toilet and fall in; I put bottom lid down now, feels like good practice

I always put the seat and lid down after use, but it doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. I just do that cause it was the rule in my family and it's more hygienic to flush with the lid down anyways

I always put it down and flush for a communal toilet. It's what everyone else should do. In my personal toilet I leave the lid up and flush only like once a day until/unless I poop. I flush before and after poop, with the seat down.

Proper etiquette is to always shut both the lid and the seat. I mean think about when you have company about to come over, people usually do this instinctively. At least ESEs seem to pay attention a lot to this sort of thing. Plus both dogs and cats yeah will drink out of a toilet with the lid up etc. I caught both of my cats doing this sometimes- but I prefer they drink out of their regular kitty bowls.

People's psychological relation to toilets is kinda interesting lol. My sister was telling me about how they never showed a toilet on tv until the 70s or 80s or something.

Lid goes down because one of my cats will stick his whole entire head into the toilet and drink from it. My guy friend does the same but more because of mold.

Personally, I would never date a person who stuck their head in the toilet and drank from it because of mold. But everyone is different.

The lid stays down if you take a shit, and up if you take a piss. Everyone is capable of moving the lid around. If you're afraid of touching the toilet seat, go take a shit in the back yard.

The seat goes down because that's its proper "default" position. All other things being equal it ought to be down. Why is manifold but let's start with the obvious. You're living in a house with a significant other and we'll further assume it's a standard gender pair (that is, a male and a female).

Dude may lift up the seat to take a quick piss and he's right to do that for reasons I need not elaborate on, but the missis needs that seat down no matter what number she needs to tick off to relieve herself. Thus, you put it back down after you're done. Likewise, the missis may be tempted to leave it up after she's done but men do indeed take a shit just like her and after a particularly challenging dinner at Taco Bell or whatever local food joint gives your bowels an involuntary and particularly rigorous "spring cleaning" well... you know where you'd like that seat to be. Ye may not even have the time or inclination to check where that seat is situated when nature calls with the implied vehemence I'm somewhat hoping ya might fail to get...

So yeah, down. It's the default position for damn good reason.

I know that the seat should go down after I'm done, but I never do it.
The Barnum or Forer effect is the tendency for people to judge that general, universally valid statements about personality are actually specific descriptions of their own personalities. A "universally valid" statement is one that is true of everyone—or, more likely, nearly everyone. It is not known why people tend to make such misjudgments, but the effect has been experimentally reproduced.

The psychologist Paul Meehl named this fallacy "the P.T. Barnum effect" because Barnum built his circus and dime museum on the principle of having something for everyone. It is also called "the Forer effect" after its discoverer, the psychologist Bertram R. Forer, who modestly dubbed it "the fallacy of personal validation".

When I first read this I thought your guy friend was dunking his whole head and drinking from the toilet like your cat - because of mold? Shook my head and had to reread it

I really don't care, it stays in the position of last use and it's up to whoever uses it next to select whatever position they want. Complaining about it will have the opposite of the desired effect, SEI tried it but learned pretty quickly.

Men, please put the toilet seat down. I have fallen into the toilet many a times before because it was left up. It’s not fun falling in a bowl in the middle of the night.

I asked my fiancee and she told me it was the "gentlemanly" thing to do, along with pumping her gas, changing her oil, and walking on the street side of the pavement.
