Default Where do dragons come from?

Weren't Western dragons originally large snakes? That's what "drakon" means in Greek, at least. Chinese dragons are also essentially snakes.

I don't think most dinosaur bones are in a condition most people could recognize they're bones, rather than a large rock. There have traditionally been stories of snakes or eels in every culture where those animals are about, AFAIK, so I'd guess they evolved from these stories. Why stories about snakes are so common is another (interesting) question.

The myth of a powerful god/hero defeating a dragon is older than time. Proto-Indo-european legends of a thunder god defeating a serpent.

The Barnum or Forer effect is the tendency for people to judge that general, universally valid statements about personality are actually specific descriptions of their own personalities. A "universally valid" statement is one that is true of everyone—or, more likely, nearly everyone. It is not known why people tend to make such misjudgments, but the effect has been experimentally reproduced.

The psychologist Paul Meehl named this fallacy "the P.T. Barnum effect" because Barnum built his circus and dime museum on the principle of having something for everyone. It is also called "the Forer effect" after its discoverer, the psychologist Bertram R. Forer, who modestly dubbed it "the fallacy of personal validation".

jordan peterson said it was combination of animals that were dangerous to humans and proto humans, like lions, snakes and eagles. there was a big cat with a tooth that lodges at the back of a human baby that went extinct.

I think most mythological creatures were based on real shit from history, just widely exaggerated:

I think the legends come from fossils and dinosaur bones.
