I think Charles Chaplin was INFP, not ENFJ. At least he looks like one to me...

I don't know that much about Chaplin, but here's what Marlon Brando (probably SLE) has to say about him in his memoirs:

I have met selfish and brutish INFPs, Ethical subtype INFPs can appear clearly extraverted, but that is hardly conclusive either...
Oh well, sometimes pictures do bring inspiration. He was quite a dandy.

I tend to be of the opinion that you do not control your first function as well as he seemed to control his (external?) feeling. So irrational ethical type most likely IMO, and personally I'd still go for INFP, because - well - creative Fe yearns to influence and control others - creative Fi mainly just wants to be accepted.

So irrational ethical type most likely IMO, and personally I'd still go for INFP, because well creative Fe yearns to influence and control others - creative Fi mainly just wants to be accepted.

Or as Cracka is Si dominant ESTJ...
Or Mr Burns is not your average INFJ.

How well you control different functions is a bit hard to say since it cannot be measured objectively, but generally at the very least, ethical subtype INFPs control the emotions they express far better than most ENFJs do theirs.

I am Fi dominant, yes, but the first function is the unshakeable foundation according to SG. How well do you control an unshakeable foundation? It may feather all the storms, but how reactive and flexible does that sound?

I was just quoting Brando's book, Songs my Mother Taught me. I don't know if that is confirmed by other people. Yet, since Brando's own self-portrait in the book is hardly flattering, I assume that what he wrote is what he observed.

I wasn't really... I think the idealized view of most celebrities gets in the way of their real self which they don't really show others... just like when we talked about Gandhi.

Yes, you can say that -- having read his memoirs, I think that he was logical subtype either of ILE or SLE. Right now I am inclined to SLE, but yes I am flip-flopping.

Agree, Chaplin is one of those that I hadn't given much thought to since childhood, so I was suprised to hear such negative things about him.

The kid in me was suprised, the adult doesn't care one way or another.

The Little Tramp character is definately IXFp. Don't know about Chaplin himself, all of the biographies I've read about him have potrayed him as having major issues. INFp is not a possibility I would've considered, I would have thought he was more of an

type. In an interview, he stated that he didn't care about the art of his work, he was in the business for wealth. Not something I could see an INFp saying.

Not everyone, mostly actors, for the reasons that they 1) love attention; 2) are good at putting on "different faces" and imitating people; 3) are different in public then they are in reality; and, 4) are likely to chase after the "glory" job without putting thought into thinking how unrealistic and improbable it is that they would actually become famous doing an acting job like that.

Reason number four also makes me think that the majority of crack-laden homeless bums on the streets of Hollywood are also probably ENTP. It goes both ways.

The first three I think apply to Chaplin. He acted like a very childish fun-loving character, but as Expat pointed out, he was more of a cold and violent person to the people he really "knew".

In that case, that would be an argument against ENTp for Brando, since he sort of "drifted" into acting as a way to make a living, not in search for fame etc - at least according to him.

This man (Steve Mangan, some comedian) reminds me of Chaplin when he smiles - I think he is ESTp. I know that's not much good

trait specifically. anyhow, the ENTp guy i know really sucks at that. i don't exactly disagree with you, that there aren't a lot of ENTp actors or that they might not be drawn to that (but god, why them as a whole over any NF?)

YEs I read his autobiography several years ago and have seen various documentaries, interviews etc.

But also I am developing a technique by means of which one can spot the main influences on someone from VI. Until now it workds only for ESFJ parents, mainly mothers.

They tens to create a certain amount of paleness in the children, a detached attitutde as well and also the child's face takes some of the their main expressions.
