# Thread: UK Best Places to Live project

1. ## UK Best Places to Live project

A project I have been working on in recent times. It is in two parts because otherwise I would exceed the 100,000 character limit on posts. I will give an explanation periodically.

The places are parliamentary constituencies because my full project takes into account demographic data on political inclinations.

If you don't consider one of the factors useful, you could omit it (or give it a different weight) and calculate your own Overall scores.

The E, O, A, C, N columns represent the average Big Five scores of people in that area. The source data had the scores normalized so that the average score for the whole country (with the exception of Northern Ireland, which was not included) was 50, although I didn't bother to maintain that. Those columns are not relevant to the Overall Score, with the exception of Neuroticism - I just included them because I think they'd be of general interest.

The Overall Score is based on five factors. All the scores for a factor were calibrated so that the average = 1. A score reflects how well a place does relative to this.
House Factor = Median house prices. In some cases where there was no data, I took into account median salaries. I guess my intention is to use it as a proxy for cost of living.
Crime Factor = Based on the crime rate per capita. For Scotland where I had no directly comparable data, I put a speculative figure.
History Factor = This takes into account the number of listed buildings. For example, half the score was based on the number of Grade I buildings, and half the score was based on the number of Grade II* buildings (because there are far more Grade II* buildings to Grade I, a Grade I building is worth about 2 Grade II* buildings). Because Scotland and Northern Ireland have different classification systems to England & Wales, I had to give a rough approximation of relative scores. The scores for S and NI can thus only really be said to be absolute within themselves. The score for each Parliamentary constituency was divided by their land area and multiplied by the percentage of land that is built on. This means that this factor takes into account both buildings that are historically interesting and the proportion of land that is not built on (generally land that is classified as natural or as farmland), which I think is a nice consideration when deciding where to live). The final score is actually based on rank rather than absolute score, otherwise 1st place would score more than 4000 times higher than 648th place, which would completely skew the Overall Score when taking all five factors into account.
Age Factor: This takes into account the proportion of people aged 20 to 29 relative to all those who live in the place. I chose this range because that is likely to be the range of most interest to the demographics of this forum.
Low N Factor: This simply takes into account levels of neuroticism in the local population.
Overall Score: This multiples all of the factors together. The final scores have been adjusted so that the average score is 1.

I may get round to describing flaws in the data and perhaps describing other factors I did not include.

I wonder why Burnley is really low I gotta figure that out haha

4. wow I've lived in 6 different constituencies ranging from 60 to 646

the volume of data that went into this is really awesome. And it's a really cool project

something that's not accounted for - and I'm not sure how it would be done numerically - is the general culture and social scene of a place. For example, number 60 (Exeter) is the highest on the list in terms of places I've lived and it does have a lot of great old buildings (it's a Roman town & has a wonderful cathedral), low crime rate and is a university town so high level of people w degrees and a generally young population. But personally I think it wouldn't be a great place to live as a 20-29 y/o if you weren't an undergraduate because all the culture and night life is geared towards students (and then dies over the summer). Social scene and culture would be the things that would draw me most to a constituency and a lot of the higher ones on this list don't have that (but then, I guess, benefit from low house prices and low crime rate).

5. Why are you doing this. Is this a hobby or part of your regular job?

6. This project has no relevance to me as I don't reside in the UK, but proper respect for all the hard work.

that's certainly a good point. I can't think how to remedy that. The Age factor could be adjusted so as to not include ages most associated with university (i.e. 21 and under), and perhaps moved even higher still. But I suspect that generally, people would still prefer to live in a place which has a disproportionate amount of people their age range, and which is thus more likely to be catered towards them, even if I cannot properly think of a way of accounting for any skew from seasonal residency.

My full data set has info on the proportion of people who have degrees, as well as data on the proportion of people who have degrees and/or A-levels (or equivalent). The degree score could remove somewhat any skew that rates places highly on the Age factor because of course you would have to have left university to have a degree. But I didn't include it here because I thought it would be too limiting to have!

It is just a recent interest of mine: to consider where might be the best place to live, perhaps differing in different stages of my life. I would hate to feel limited out of fear of ending up in a worse place.

I cannot tell you if Socionics theory has anything going for it. But I can tell you for example, that one place on my chart has 2.95 times the proportion of 20-29 year olds per capita than the average place, or 5.40 times the place with the smallest proportion. But yes, to a certain extent, you don't really need to refer to a table to know where people your age tend to amalgamate.

9. I've made some revisions:

I corrected crime scores for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
I calculated more precise personality trait scores for about 200 places.
I updated the house scores to take into account house prices up to the year ending in March 2018 (I think the previous data was from 2014).

10. I've made a ranking of best places to live in England (I may or may not do something similar for the other regions of the UK), factoring in Index of Multiple Deprivation scores and median house prices (i.e. it is a list of places by how good they are as well as their affordability). The locations are electoral wards and the median house prices are for the year ending September 2018. This post only has 1295 wards out of 7410 due to the forum's character count limit for posts.

11. There are 59 wards that score better on the Index of Multiple Deprivation (i.e. are considered less "deprived") than Keele, Newcastle-under-Lyme but have a higher median house price: this is a list of the best not exceeding the respective median house prices:

 1 Seer Green, Chiltern £700,000 2 Gamston South, Rushcliffe £330,000 3 Broughton Astley-Broughton, Harborough £244,975 4 Perton East, South Staffordshire £193,000

12. The wards with the lowest median house price in England are North Ormesby, Middlesbrough & Horden, County Durham, at £37,000, although Horden, County Durham is the second worst ward in England according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation.

I made a ranking of the the wards with the best Index of Multiple Deprivation score for a particular median house price value. The percentile ranking is how the ward ranks in the Index of Multiple Deprivation rankings (higher is better).

These places actually exist: I didn't come up with the names.

 Percentile Ward Name Median house price 2.97% Horden, County Durham £37,000 4.06% Whitefield, Pendle £43,000 7.86% Victoria, Hartlepool £54,000 14.14% Ferryhill, County Durham £56,750 17.84% Marsden, Pendle £65,000 18.12% Newtown, Copeland £76,000 20.80% Wingate, County Durham £77,000 22.63% Egremont North, Copeland £89,475 32.33% Coxhoe, County Durham £90,000 32.35% Pierremont, Darlington £93,000 32.82% Leadgate and Medomsley, County Durham £98,000 41.46% Esh and Witton Gilbert, County Durham £99,475 49.62% Arlecdon, Copeland £101,000 71.04% Hipswell, Richmondshire £110,000 75.91% Chester-le-Street East, County Durham £115,500 87.35% Bottesford, North Lincolnshire £137,500 89.03% Billingham West, Stockton-on-Tees £148,500 89.51% Winstanley, Wigan £155,000 90.41% Kings Walk, Mansfield £158,000 94.33% Shipley View, Erewash £160,000 99.21% Keele, Newcastle-under-Lyme £161,250 99.61% Perton East, South Staffordshire £193,000 99.81% Broughton Astley-Broughton, Harborough £244,975 99.97% Gamston South, Rushcliffe £330,000 100.00% Seer Green, Chiltern £700,000

13. closer to monarchs

14. A final table:
I've determined the best ward (factoring in both Index of Multiple Deprivation scores and median house prices) for each of the 533 parliamentary constituencies in England. I did that to get a table that was representative for the whole of England; people may be interested in specific counties or regions so I labeled those.

The percentile ranking is how the ward ranks in the Index of Multiple Deprivation rankings (higher is better).

15. Very impressive work.

It's a shame such detailed statistics aren't made(or at least I'm not aware of them) for other big countries and places which people often move to(or at least consider moving to permanently/in the long term).

Keep the good work up!

I think that would probably be most interesting for cities in the United States and Europe in particular.

I have done a "World Freedom Index" before.

I think this website (http://www.bitcoinnomads.com/) is the best I've seen overall: it covers 374 cities around the world, and includes the factors relating to climate, cost of living, crime, economic freedom, and internet speeds (they are not equally weighted I believe) - I find the data more interesting than the ranking itself. It's especially useful for those trying to decide where to travel abroad.

I also have a thread on Humidex ratings: that was from a time I think when the above website was down, although I was interested in humidex ratings generally.

There is also this tool for finding US towns most match your political outlook. (It would be brilliant to have a database of the data used).

There's also been a few threads that have discussed countries and types: this thread has links to journals that have researched personality geographically for the USA and UK.

I suspect I will inevitably start looking into further data for the USA at least.
