I can appreciate some of hip hop and r&b style of music. I'm not a fan of violent and/or vulgare Rap (both visually and in terms of lyrics), in fact I'm allergic to it even if my musical style tolerance is pretty high. When I'm listening to cool r&b, it's probably because I've been hooked by its musical content, and then I'm all ears for the lyrics. I am generally more interested in what musicians have to say musically, however we are all used to have a good idea of what is expected from almost any style of "song format" based pieces of music. When I'm listening to a country song for the first time, I know that the rhetorical content will be very different than that of an Urban Rap "song" or symphonic metal song.

The lyrics of "This days" from Nat Dogg (I didn't know him because I have a very limited hip hop culture) are cool and maybe people can relate to the song or even maybe give them the motivation to never give up on their skills and gifts. I like songwriters who use music and lyrics in an harmonious way like when there is a clear connection and interaction between the lyrics and the music in service of the storytelling the song is about instead of just using the musical "style" as a typical uniformed support. Styles and forms especially when indistualized can sometimes limit the musical freedom and expression imho.

I'm listening to this documentary my boyfriend has put on called Oasis Supersonic but I really hate how British they are and the way they keep saying fucking this and that so fast. So I don't get why he likes this music and them so much.

There's more to the lyrics than that, but I guess you need to be familiar with american slang and ghetto culture to make sense of it. Anyway, I relate to most of your other points. I always pay close attention to the (non-lyrical) musical content, and with hip-hop and r&b I also pay attention to the music production (sequencing, mixing, masterting), as that's a big part of it.
My appreciation for rap and hip-hop is mostly limited to the west coast G-Funk style, heavily influenced by funk, jazz, soul, r&b, and gospel. Sometimes samples from existing songs are used, other times new music is performed and recorded, many times it's a mix of these things and other techniques.
