The decisive thing is not the reality of the object, but the reality of the subjective factor, i.e. the primordial images, which in their totality represent a psychic mirror-world. It is a mirror, however, with the peculiar capacity of representing the present contents of consciousness not in their known and customary form but in a certain sense sub specie aeternitatis, somewhat as a million-year old consciousness might see them.

@Tallmo I can get you into Mahler if you want. The Leonard Bernstein versions are probably going to be the most "accurate" since I've never found a bunch of recordings of Mahler conducting Mahler, even if people might otherwise think the Bernstein versions are the pop versions or something. Do get into Mahler, I have two recordings of Das Lied von der Erde (which is probably the worst thing to start on, it's sung all the way through but the singing just adds more complexity on top of the instrumentals instead of it being like most of the Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs found in the symphonies where there's at least a sort of "conventional" melody to follow and the instrumentals seldom get louder than the singer.) I think this is how you get into Mahler: you start on the first symphony and you work your way to the last symphony. That's how I did it when I first heard some Mahler and liked it at least.

Default Bach - Concerto for Violin and Oboe in c minor, BWV 1060a

    Love this:

"A man with a definite belief always appears bizarre, because he does not change with the world; he has climbed into a fixed star, and the earth whizzes below him like a zoetrope."
    ........ G. ........... K. ............... C ........ H ........ E ...... S ........ T ...... E ........ R ........ T ........ O ........ N ........

"Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the Church, is often labeled today as fundamentalism... Whereas relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and swept along
by every wind of teaching, looks like the only
    attitude acceptable to today's standards."

Default Schubert - Piano sonata D.960

    When that's over, there's this:

thanks for the advice. Listening through the symphonies from no 1 is a good idea. There's also a practical problem with these huge romantic works. One has to have peace and be well rested. Not tired after work in the evening. But maybe one symphony every Sunday. I can start tomorrow.

But i like the 5th so far, parts of it. Although its hard to pay attention through the whole work. One cool thing: The very slow melody from the Adagietto reappears towards the end of the symphony but now faster and in a happier mood. It's like some integration process has taken place. Took me a while to notice that. But I'll get to the 5th in five weeks.

@Tallmo I feel like listening to symphonies is one thing I like to do when I'm tired like reading books or watching a movie but then maybe that's just me. As long as you're not having to listen to music for school or work or whatever I feel like it's a relaxing activity even if it's long, complex, and emotionally turbulent late Romantic music. You get absorbed in it and by the time it's over you're not tired anymore. That might not work if you're not currently into that kind of music at all though.
