    Default The Hedgehog Concept

    The Hedgehog Concept
(Book: Good to Great by Jim Collins, 2001)

TL;TR : Hedgehog wins against fox because focus and simplicity.

In his famous essay “The Hedgehog and the Fox,”Isaiah Berlin divided the world into two groups, basedon an ancient Greek proverb, which pitted the two naturalenemies against each other. Foxes pursue many endsat the same time and see the world in all its complexity;they are scattered or diffused, moving on many levels, never integrating their thinking into one overall conceptor unifying vision. Hedgehogs, on the other hand, simplifya complex world into a single idea or principlethat unifies and guides everything. Regardless of theworld’s complexity, the hedgehog reduces all challengesand dilemmas to simple ideas — anything that does notsomehow relate to the hedgehog idea holds no relevance. When foxes and hedgehogs are pitted against oneanother, the hedgehog always wins

I think the hedgehog is a Ti-dominant (probably a LII) while the Fox is someone with Ti as a strong but non-dominant function (probably an LIE).

It's worthwhile pointing out that Tetlock disagrees and believes that foxes win because of flexibility and the ability to understand the amount of uncertainty.
The expert political judgment project also compared the accuracy track records of "foxes" and "hedgehogs" (two personality types identified in Isaiah Berlin's 1950 essay "The Hedgehog and the Fox"). "Hedgehogs" performed less well, especially on long-term forecasts within the domain of their expertise.

Comparing the fox to the LIE and the hedgehog to the LII seems pretty accurate to me. Who "wins" is another question.

When I arrived at this forum, ignorant of Socionics but with a bit of MBTI and a lot of life experience, I thought that LIE's were the source of all innovation and progress. I am LIE and have several patents and a company, my sister is LII, and the only reason she was able to get a job is because a friend of mine created one for her. She is brilliant, but seemingly unmotivated to actually go out and look for work. She does very well in a University environment, where everything is settled and her job is guaranteed, but she is terrible in places where things are not settled and people compete with each other. Which is exactly where I thrive.

What I quickly discovered while here is that Te is not very good at advancing science. Engineering, yes, but I believe that Ti is the source of all real science. All the really significant thinkers whose work I admire turned out to be LII's. The LIE's are good at piling up money, but how, exactly, does that advance the progress of the human race?

So, I guess the answer to the question of "Who wins?" depends on what you think "winning" means.

Honestly seemed like LII or ILE vs ILI or indeed LIE to me, but reversed; hedgehog being LIE and LII being the fox. Why? Because the LIE will discard any info irrelevant to pragmatism, while LII will take in anything, trying to objectively see the truth. For LII, their ultimate goal is truth, for te + ni its material value, efficiency, productivity, which wins wars. "Eloquence belongs to the conqueror". Not the scientist.
